The catch fences as they are designed now do a perfect job keeping the bulk of the car inside the track limits and out of the stands, but as this incident and the Daytona Nationwide incident show, the fence turns into a cheese grater, rips pieces off the car, and does little to prevent that debris from flying into the stands. And the Las Vegas incident also showed how that cheese grater effect can also harm the driver. I think it is time the major racing series and tracks pool resources and come up with a significant redesign or alternative to the catch fence that retains the ability to keep the car out of the stands while not shredding it and stopping the smaller debris as well.
