How do you Fix a Lean Condition?

I just purchased an OBD-II scan tool and hooked it up to my car when the Check Engine light light came on. The error code was system lean condition. I proceeded to clear the code and the car was fine for a few days but then after a week the code came back. I drive a 98 Ford Escort with 30,000 Mi. If anyone knows how to get rid of a lean condition I would appreciate the help. Thanks!

Cleaning the MAF. I had a 96 Contour with the Zetec that threw code P0171 (I think, or P0174, which ever one is lean condition detected)

The sensing wire in the MAF was covered with dirt, so it was telling the engine less air was entering than really was. So the PCM reduced the amount of fuel metered out of the injectors. O2 sensor now detects a lean condition.

As long as you don't break the MAF, this is a relativly cheap thing to try.

FWIW, that was my experience, of course your mileage may vary!
