I've run into the same issue with our Mazda CX-5 and my Fiesta ST. It's definitely something to do with iTunes Match. Not sure you can really blame the car in this case.
Agreed -- I don't think you can blame the car on this one. Basically, the car asks the phone for its list of songs/albums. The iPhone returns your entire list (even though you have iTunes Match streaming via cellular data disabled). The car is completely unaware of what is or is not actually available locally on the iPhone.
It would be smarter if the iPhone could see that streaming was disabled and then only include locally stored tracks to the car when the song/album list is requested...
