IMHO, I see no harm in offering an auto-box since every high performance car makers do so already and most well heeled performance buyers seems to have no issues with it so long as SRT continued to offer the manual-box, an automatic version will only increase the market potentials. A V-8 lower priced version is another good idea for SRT since the Viper is not exactly flying off the dealer lots, so why not? The auto and the lower priced V8 might just save the Viper from the next round on the chopping blocks...Just saying...

"Asked if there is an automatic transmission that can handle the Viper's torque, Gilles said "not yet.""

Good thing Gilles qualified his answer as there are a few cars out there with auto boxes that have more torque. Edmunds happens to have one in its LT fleet.

@desmolicious: As mentioned, the packaging is the real problem. Good luck fitting an the transmission of a MB AMG V-12TT anywhere on the Viper.
