    It's proximity based, right? If it is, shouldn't it just stay in your pocket? All my cars are low-tech, so pardon my ignorance.

    I'm sure it's not intended for you to put it there all the time. It is probably the emergency back up slot in case the smart key battery is dead and the car does not recognize it. All automakers have this back up in some form. Nissan places it in the dash, Hyundai in the center console and Honda and Toyota require you to place the key right next to the start/stop button.
