So what you're saying is that Ford built a batch of AWD's, has found some issue with at least a certain percentage of them, and has therefore held the current ones in the factory until they can all be checked for that issue?

And these issues are also then forwarded to the dealers if it's believed that it may affect ones that have already left the factory?

Just checking, since I may try to snag one over the holidays. Hopefully this dealership will consider dealing on one. They had over a dozen in stock, which is far more than any dealership I've seen down here have in stock.
  • ANT14ANT14 Member Posts: 2,687
Yes, and If it affects vehicles that have been shipped, dealer's will be notified. Although none have been notified yet, so the issue is only at the factory level. At this point, it's only a "checking" issue.

Who knows, maybe upon analyzing the issue they see it's nothing. This "checking" goes on for various reasons...maybe a line worker had a concern, maybe the supplier saw a defect on a part they are supplying, maybe a worker saw a scratch on something, etc. Could be various things.

Thanks for the explanation ANT14. Any idea how long these might be held?
  • ANT14ANT14 Member Posts: 2,687
Till each one is checked over, I'm guessing a few more days...just a guess though.

    RE: Color

Is there a such a thing as special ordering an exterior color?

    Say at LTD in Silver?

Also - re the hold on AWD above. Would that have been taken in to consideration when we were given a Jan build date? Seems logical but wasn't sure.
  • jaki30jaki30 Member Posts: 73
ANT seems to be pretty knowledgeable. I guess I'll just try to locate a Silver SEL/FWD. I only want the second row console. If the vehicle had the Front comfort package, I would consider possibly that, also. I don't want to order one because that would put it into the March timeframe for delivery.

I agree with the low choices on the options package. I think Ford is trying to copy the Japanese order process. The choices get very limited, but, they seem to sell the cars anyway.

This would be our first American car in a long time. One reason I am being so cautious.

     Happy Holidays.

I think the hold is because of a Dec 20, 04 article I seen on chasis welds on some of these vehicles. Ford is hiring an outside supplier to fix this. I have no inside information (or any more detail) on this but have read on www.blueovalnews.com that this is occuring. I can only assume then that this is the reason for the delay of some of you not hearing about production for your vehicles when ordered in November.

ANT14, do you know where on the chasis these cracks are being found. I only ask so those already purchased can review their own vehicles.
  • ANT14ANT14 Member Posts: 2,687
The welds only affected vehicles that were not shipped, none made it to the dealerships... an outside company is taking care of it.

AWD, seems they are checking the emergency brake cables...just checking, so far they haven't found anything.

The limited choices on groups, colors, etc. makes it much easier to find/build the vehicle. Also means that when the vehicle is at the dealership, and they are running one of those "Only if it's on the lot" specials, then the vehicle comes a bit more loaded and chances are it'll make the customer happy. It reduces build complexity.

That's another reason we can't order a special color for the vehicle, other than what's available. Also makes it easier for Ford's dealerships/worker's etc, to spot certain cars. Example: Limited (means it's monotone)... Eddie Bauer (on the Explorer for example) as 2 tone exterior, etc.

Yes that’s right 1400mi (purchased Oct ’04) on a new freestyle and already taken to the dealer twice. I had a real strong burning smell starting around 200mi. I took to the dealer and they said it is just the brakes wearing in or it’s the stuff the prep guys spray on the engine and to give it a few hundred miles to burn in. Also there is a loud creaking noise from the left rear whenever I go over bumps.

So yesterday at 1400mi I took it to service and they said that they had to replace a dragging brake caliper assembly for the smell and a bushing and coil on the left rear to fix the creaking noise. Now today, the day after being at the dealer, the charging system light comes on and the alternator is only producing 11.7volts! Which makes me suspect the smell was a burning alternator, not brakes!

This the day before I drive the family 600mi. for a family vacation, which has to be cancelled because the dealer is closed and I would not trust driving that piece of junk that far in that condition. I’ve had 3 Fords in the past and thought they had really got it right with the Freestyle, but I guess not. How can you pay $30,000 for a car and have this many poor quality problems!

Anyone else had these problems or had to deal with this?
  • willie19willie19 Member Posts: 139
Man that's a real bummer to have that happen during the Xmas Holiday season.Hope they get your problems fixed ASAP. I was planning to get the Freestyle early in the Spring but after hearing about your experience I may have to hold back a little later until Ford can overcome all their early production problems. Thanks for letting us know and again we hope that those defects will be repaired to your satisfaction and restore your faith in Ford that your vehicle is not a piece of junk. Happy Holidays.

Funny how 10 years ago, contrasting wheelarches viz Eddie Bauer meant top of the line, monochrome bottom ....now contrasting wheelarch colors mean bottom of the line and monochrome top.....

    Confused?
  • lumber2lumber2 Member Posts: 184
Ant: RE Color limits on LTD. when the 500 can have Silver on Ltd, Freestyle SEL/SL can have it too, no reason for the Freestyle LTD not to. Serious error on Fords part. All it takes is hitting a switch to approve the paint for a model. No difficulty there.

Gee sounds like I'm on a color (R)Ant today. Sorry man, your the best.

Merry Christmas everyone. Put a smile on your families faces.

Hey, same here -- my Freestyle has been at the dealership for the last 4 days, and the earliest I can see it is Monday. It leaks oil and they are waiting for a replacement transfer seal (?) to arrive from Michigan (no guarantees when it arrives)... Ford Customer Service confirmed that they do not provide loaners. So for $30+ I'm driving nothing... Once this ordeal is over I have to schedule appointment with body shop because front doors are not mounted correctly. After that we'll get to occasional clicking noise in rear breaks... This is my first and last Ford.
  • brantybranty Member Posts: 53
Sorry to hear about the electrical problems.

I too have gone about 2,300 km (1,400 mi) in our Limited AWD Freestyle but have had absolutely no problems. We've had it since mid-November and it is a great vehicle.

Went out several times the day of our snow/freezing rain storm (Dec. 23rd) and I couldn't believe how well it handled! No matter what I did to initiate spinning wheels I could not get it to happen. Traction is great.

This is our first Ford and I am happy to this point. My previous vehicle was the first year of the 2nd generation Mazda MPV and I never regretted the purchase.

I don't think that I would hold back making your purchase of a Freestyle.
  • jaki30jaki30 Member Posts: 73
I think I need to pass on the Freestyle. It is a nice vehicle, but, I can't chance the first year gremlins that are showing up.

Too bad. I really wanted to buy American.
  • headcaseheadcase Member Posts: 19
My Freestyle has over 2500 miles on it, with absolutely no problems.

I wouldn't classify all Freestyles as junk, simply because some folks have had problems. Yes, first year models of anything (cars, computers, dishwashers, whatever) tend to have more problems as part of introducing a new design, but that's to be somewhat expected.

Until I see a larger trend of numerous Freestyle owners having QA problems, I'd reserve judgement on the model or manufacturer. And keep in mind, most folks don't say anything if their product is fine -- they just use it. ;-)
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
Yep. I've got 8300 trouble-free miles on my Ford Five Hundred (built on the same chassis/platform) so far! :)
  • dave2222dave2222 Member Posts: 78
i thought id just chime in, but my good friends freestyle now 5000+ miles on it has had no problems either.
  • lumber2lumber2 Member Posts: 184
Sounds like you've been unlucky with a part and a dealer that doesn't quite seem to know a brake caliper from an Alternator......
  • jschreiberjschreiber Member Posts: 50
Also sorry to hear your problems. I have 1000 miles on AWD SE without any problems. Am in Minnesota and was 15 below zero--did great on any slippery roads, much better than my previous jeep--rear door lock did freeze and door couldn't be opened for 3 days until it reached 20F BUT

I will watch closely for any problems and post anything that comes up--but so far seems to be built well, drives very nice
  • northlakesnorthlakes Member Posts: 368
First, my Redfire AWD SEL has had no problems whatsoever to this point (had it three weeks). I took it out in Minnesota's ten below zero (F) weather a few days ago. No starting issues, no leaks, no creaks.

It seems to me like some of your problems may be from the dealer's service skill.

    1) If a brake caliper was dragging, there should be some marks left on your rotor. If you see none, I would be suspicious of that diagnosis.

    2) An alternator problem the day after dealer service is also suspicious - especially after 1400 miles of no alternator problems. All it takes is a bent pin in the alternator harness, or changing the voltage regulator set point(??? - short?) to cause such problems.

Is it always at 11.7 volts, or does it vary after each start? Have you driven the Freestyle during the weekend for any purpose? Just curious if the voltage issue is consistent.

It doesn't bring your vacation back, but it is possible that not all of the quality issues originated at the factory. Good luck at the dealer's place this week. It may have almost been worth trying the 24 hour "roadside service" while the dealer was closed to see if the alternate service was any better.
  • pnewbypnewby Member Posts: 277
1K and I'm still loving it. No issues so far, and the AWD was great in our ice storm. We didn't have near as much as Cinci. or Louisville, but the 1/2 inch of ice made it pretty slippery. The AWD performed better than our 4 WD Explorer. Going down a hill Friday, a Jeep was coming the other direction and started spinning torwards me, a parked car seemed to make escaping the spinning Jeep impossible, but a quick check showed the front yard to be clear to my right. (Behind the parked car) Even though the anti-lock brakes were pumping when I tried to slow down, I was able to accelerate enough to get out of the way via the front yard, then had to dodge a tree in the yard. All came out well for my Freestyle, the Jeep, parked car, yard and all. Later that day I looked out my front window at home and saw another Jeep that had spun out on the ice, hit a mailbox 2 doors up, and came to rest in front of my house with the drive shaft laying in the road, flat tires and both air bags deployed. Maybe DC is mad cause I didn't buy a Pacifica?
  • mas23mas23 Member Posts: 38
I saw an ad for this the other day for new Ford vehicles. It is basically free scheduled maintenance for the first 2 yr/26,000 miles. Does anyone know if this applies to the Freestyle? I read the disclaimer on the bottom and it said on "2004/2005 new Ford Division vehicles excluding GT, Mustang and Super Duty." Not a big deal but probably worth a few hundred bucks. I also got a $500 Ford Credit bonus cash the other day so it may be a good time to cancel my order and pick something from the lot before 1/3/05.

"Maybe DC is mad cause I didn't buy a Pacifica? "

That made me laugh, but yes it's ironic. As I've mentioned before, I've tried quite a bit to trick the AWD system into spinning, and so far no luck. Understanding the dynamics, I know why it won't but I keep trying to. Glad you have good reflexes.

The 4x4 System in the Jeep (I believe it's QuadraTrac?) is easily fooled. Unfortuantely for many, they believe all 4x4 systems are created equal, and they are really not.
  • jjayjjay Member Posts: 28
I am considering a Freestyle (although some of these postings are causing me concern). With 4 kids, the third row will get a lot of use. My guess is that the best arrangement for us would be the two seat second row with no console to allow easy access to the third row.

Do those of you that have a Freestyle agree? Do any of you have the 7 passenger seating and use the third row constantly? Is it a hassle for the kids to operate the seat to get to the third row?

Also, a lot of third party publications question whether the engine is powerful enough for this vehicle. In reading previous postings, it seems that none of you who have purchased the Freestyle have any issues with engine power. Why is this always mentioned as a negative in some of the reviews that I have read?

Also, are unheated leather seats fine in a cold climate? I'd prefer an SEL with leather, but see that you can't get heated leather. I've never had leather seats before, so I don't know if this should this be an issue?

    Thanks!!
  • lumber2lumber2 Member Posts: 184
I find the choice of seating arrangement puzzling. I'm used to wagons with a three person seat and can't imagine anything else unless you are say use to a minivan and being able to walk through then maybe the oher ways work better. With seven you at least have room for one extra person with your crew on board.

Leather is great from the point of view of clean up and spills not seeping into the foam of the cushion. I used to hate the bum warmers that my wife loves but somehow I'm softening to them and used them often in Mass. Even so they take time to warm up and and I just use them to take the chill off the leather. I love the SEL colors but trend towards the full set of features including bum warmers from the LTD.
  • headcaseheadcase Member Posts: 19
I've got a family of five, and we use the third row ALL the time (which is one of the primary reasons we selected this model over the Volvo XC90, Acura MDX, and many other "crossover" vehicles. We got the Limited AWD fully loaded, with the 2nd row bench to fit 7. One thing we love over the other autos we tested is the easy access to the 3rd row -- the 2nd row split bench flips out of the way, and provides excellent access to the 3rd row (unlike some other models).

As for heated seats, they are a blessing -- we live in NC, but we're up here in Mass for the holidays -- and it's friggin' freezing up here!! ;-)
  • brantybranty Member Posts: 53
We have a Limited AWD - 2 passenger with console in the middle (seats 2,2,2). Access to the third row is very easy with the exception of having to lower the head restraint all the way if you want to flip the set forward (with young kids you may not need to raise the head restraints at this point so you may not have this inconvenience). The seat is very easy to operate. Our teenage sons seem to be able to hike over the second row with only the back down - so you can do it either way. If you did not have the console it would make access easier (similar set-up to our previous MPV) but the console is nice for storage of CD's/DVD's and it will fold out to hold a game system (if you have the entertainment system).

We had leather seats in our Mazda MPV but they were not heated. My wife loves the heated seats in our Freestyle - they heat the seat cushion and partly up the back and are very quick. Even unheated I do not find the seats in the Freestyle as cold as our previous vehicle (even at -23oC). If you live in a cold climate then I guess I would recommend getting heated seats (if you get leather).

The power issue is definitely something that the reviewers have raised and complained about. You need to take these kind of reviews with the usual 'grain of salt'. Power is NOT a problem with this vehicle.

For Ant- (or anyone that knows)- When I raise the rear hatch, at about floor level on both sides, I see a matching molded area on both the right and left. Shaped roughly like- (_______) It appears to be designed to hold something. Does anyone know what?

Thanks all - appreciate you feedback!

This molded area is for a cargo organizer available thru Ford accessories.

I have now topped 4000 miles in a little over 3 weeks (I know, I travel a lot for business). I keep holding my breathe, but absolutely the BEST car I have ever owned for the 1st month. Nothing wrong...ROCK SOLID...it has exceeded my expectations which were high already. Now that I have written this, watch, it will start to breakdown. I certainly hope not. But as another poster said, most people don't say anything if their car is working. We only hear about the problems. I am here to say THIS MAY BE THE BEST CAR...SUV...STATION WAGON I HAVE EVER OWNED! I hope I can say that 6 - 12 months from now.

P.S. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH THE POWER IN THIS VEHICLE! IT MOVES OUT!

Just double-checking a price that I've received. It's for a Freestyle Limited with all the options (minus the DVD player). The MSRP is $33,620. Edmunds lists the Invoice at $30,717.

X-plan price that was quoted to me is $31,010.18, which would be about $300 (or 1%) above invoice. Does that seem correct?

Also, I asked about any other incentives (that I've seen here). Apparently there IS a $500 Holiday Cash Back of $500 through the Finance Department, even though the Ford site doesn't list this. I should be able to get 1.9% for 36 months, too. This is better than paying cash, since CD rates above 2.75% for 36 months are easy to find.

The car isn't actually in stock yet, but it has supposedly left "on the convoy" and they believe it should arrive "any day now".

Really just wanting to confirm this X-plan price (I've done deals very similar to this in the past without having the X-plan available).

Also, if anybody knows the code for one of these $500 or $750 rebates posted here, maybe I could get that, as well? I haven't received any info form Ford on this (even though I have received a brochure from them on the vehicle). For those getting this offer, was it through email? How long did it take to get it?

Somehow I bet I receive it a day or two AFTER getting the car.
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
I also talked to my salesman about the Aux-In button, and if it could be used to add a set of RCA inputs for an Ipod, etc.

He checked with those who do the installs for them, and they reported that the radios with the Aux-In button don't have any provision for hooking anything up to the back of the radio. Apparently the Aux-In button is there just to fill a hole?

On the Limited's, the button is supposed to read "Satellite Radio", and is used to hook up a 3dr party Sirius satellite radio system. Apparently the Audiophile stereo system is Sirius-ready?

I guess I'll find out more once I actually see my vehicle.
  • anotherwagonanotherwagon Member Posts: 301
I got another rebate email from Ford Direct. The first one says

Freestyle/Five Hundred Internet Bonus Cash. Exp 1/3/05-

I don't have the 2nd one with me but ask the dealer about that!
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
Is there any way you could forward that email to me?

Use the email address shown on my business card here, if you don't mind.

    http://www.neonlightsimaging.com

Maybe the problem is that when I requested the brochure from Ford, I answered that I was interested in buying in 1 - 3 months, instead of right now! Well, I thought the time-frame was correct until I finally located this vehicle and found out about the extra $500 off and the low financing rates.

Of course, that (or something better) could be available after 1/3, too.

Anyway, if you could forward that email to me, I'd appreciate it. At least it would let me hand the dealer something "official" for him to look into it with.
  • anotherwagonanotherwagon Member Posts: 301
Sure, let me figure out which "in" box I put it in - I think it is at work.

Also, pricing - our Z plan price was 29522.25 - then we added the power pedal and I'm guessing it is around 29673.23 - can't get confirmation from the dealer until Thurs. We ordered everything except DVD.

    What color did you find?

Still no AWD in ATL. Our build date is 1-10. I hope to use the rebates too or maybe they will have another one??
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
    Thanks.

The color I intend to get (assuming it actually arrives here in time) is the Merlot Metallic (red).

Z plan is for retirees, correct?

Looks like my price is about 4.5% higher than yours. I think that's in line with what I'd read about X-plan vs. the A-plan (or whatever the plan is for Ford employees).

I seem to recall that I've always purchased my new Fords for about $100 to $500 above invoice (before any rebates). I seem to recall that the one I got for $100 above invoice actually ended up being about $300 above, due to some other charges. Too long ago to remember clearly, though.

It appears that they also have a blue one (the darker blue) decked out like this here, too. I think it's on one of the other lots, now, though. I think that one's actually on the lot, and not waiting for transportation, though I could be wrong.

I would guess that there will be other rebates after these current ones expire. But, you never know. They might start up again AFTER you take delivery on yours.

I think I read (on this board) that you can call Ford to see if they can apply those other rebates retroactively if you'd ordered. Or perhaps that was on the Dodge Magnum board.
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
I couldn't find a single one in the Houston area, either, with AWD. I think at one time there was a single LTD on one lot with AWD available, but I hadn't seen any since then.
  • anotherwagonanotherwagon Member Posts: 301
Yes, Z is retirees. A/Z are same levels and X is a little more though I'm not sure of the %.

I'm hanging on the rebates I have just in case...however, knowing my luck....

The coupon is in my inbox at work. I will forward it to you tom.
  • anotherwagonanotherwagon Member Posts: 301
I just found a printout of a LTD AWD that we found on the Internet. I had printed the invoice and it shows $29,673.25 A plan and $31,010.18 X plan. That should help w/the different. Suggested retail $33,620 - looks like it has everything but the DVD. Invoice total was $31,007.25.

Hope that helps - I'll confirm our pricing Thurs.

Also, noticed for the first time a dealer included the Freestyle in their print ad. However, all of them here are FWD...

Let us know how it goes.
  • barnstormer64barnstormer64 Member Posts: 1,106
Thanks for the confirmation of the X-plan price.

Now to wait for actual delivery of the vehicle. I had hoped to be on my way back home by now, but I guess my vacation will have to be extended.

I just got my Freestyle Friday. Black Limited AWD Moonroof. I have 2 questions:

    1. It has the memory option but I have not found a way to have the seats, mirrors, peddles maitain my settings. They always reset to the factory setting when I unlock the car with the keyfob.

    2. How the do I get the outside temperature to display?
  • brantybranty Member Posts: 53
We have a Limited model with the Audiophile system and the rear entertainment system. The "aux" button on the radio allows you to scroll between the CD/DVD and the "aux" modes. The "aux" is used to plug in a video game system through RCA plugs on the entertainment system. I believe that a cable with RCA audio and a mini-plug would allow you to listen to an MP3 player. I have used it to connect my pocket PC that I use with a GPS and it seems to work for the voice prompts for travel directions. It works pretty well but I don't like the cord hanging down from the roof. I will have to try an MP3 player to see if it works.

I am not sure why manufacturers don't provide plug-in's for other audio equipment. As well, I am not sure about satellite radio.
  • brantybranty Member Posts: 53
We also have a Black Limited AWD with moonroof (great choice!) Ours also has the rear entertainment system.

As with other vehicles you get 2 key fobs with the Freestyle. On the Limited they are different (#1 and #2).

You have to set the seat position, mirrors and pedals you want and then push "set" followed by either 1 or 2. If you set the first position as #1 then the key fob #1 will set the seat position when you push the unlock button. The #2 setting for seats, mirrors & pedals will only be initiated when you push the unlock for key fob #2.

Of course you can simply unlock the vehicle and push either 1 or 2 to set the position but I like the key fob feature.

In order to see the outside temperature you need to push the "ext" button on the climate control system (just below the display window)

Call the dealer today regarding my SEL AWD Freebie order (10/28) and found that my salesperson has quit. When they finally dug up my info I found out that my Freebie is done and is "bucked", which I guess is waiting to be transported to the dealer. The official delivery date is 1/10/05, but the dealer said that can move either up or down by a week. I am concerned because I do have some incentives riding on this that expire by 1/3/05. What is the chance that I can cash in on the incentives? At least I've got a VIN# now.

Another interesting detail -- it has been 2 weeks since I took my car to the dealership for the oil leak problem. The car sat at the dealer for 5 days -- they couldn't get the part. So they returned me the car without repairing it, saying that the weather was too bad so they couldn't get the part. Now I've been waiting for them to call back when the part arrives (some kind of a seal). They never called, of course, so I contacted Ford Cust. Service -- and after several hours of research they told me that this seal is ... on national backorder. What this means is that Ford has plenty of these parts to manufacture and sell new cars, but since I've already paid for mine, then what's the rush... I can wait now. Just a note for all the happy customers, if you do get in trouble, you know what to expect...
  • willie19willie19 Member Posts: 139
Hey Branty,JS, Northlakes, and others... thanks for reporting about the Freebie's excellent handling in the cold, icy regions. Just wondered if you folks have installed snow tires in conjunction with the AWD, or is the standard all-season tires that Ford provides is adequate enough to drive around on slippery surfaces without much difficulty. We do get a fair amount of snow during mid-winter and if not the roads can be quite icy at times. I'm planning to purchase a SEL which comes with 17" Continental A/S tires which may be a little different from the 18" Pirelli A/S that some of you may have.
  • brantybranty Member Posts: 53
I have not installed snow tires and probably will not this season (there do not appear to be many 18" sizes around anyway). The Pirelli's have a fairly course tread and grip in snow and ice very well (although I know the tread does not have the technology used in today's winter tires - i.e., softer compounds and special tread pattern). I had Pirelli Winter Ice tires on my last vehicle (2000 Mazda MPV) and they worked well but I found that they even skidded in certain conditions (front drive only)

Since our dump of snow and ice on the 23rd, there are several areas where salt has not quite cut through the ice. The tires perform well but you really do need to be careful (even with winter tires). Yesterday I tried to stop at an intersection on a gentle downward hill (no traffic residential area) but I could not stop just slid...took foot off the brakes and gradually turned the corner with no problem (definitely missed the stop sign though!). We don't use a sand/salt mix in Toronto just salt so I guess the surface was like a wet ice rink. I think that winter tires may have faired better in this situation but I must admit I did not read the conditions well either.
