I live in Massachusetts and found some flat style flaps at a C.A.P. (Consumer Auto Parts) store for $5.00 per pair. Although not moulded they fit good and do a fine job of protecting the side finish until exact fit are available.
  • mrlizzzardmrlizzzard Member Posts: 31
Get those flaps on NOW!I went to Autozone and got some to fit a contour for the front and flat ones in the rear.I won't tell you which ones because they are both marginal at best.Tell your dealers at purchase time to add them or no purchase. That will get Ford to move on the issue. This is a FINE vehicle, none better but with only 1000 miles I see chips way beyond the 3M protection.I have the LTD.with 18" Pirelli's and it's a super tire but throws gravel right at the paint.Make sure they extend beyond the wheel well to protect while the front wheels are turning.
As a side note, the Freestyle is so well made, smooth quiet power, great economy and fully featured and most of all it's AMERICAN MADE!

I noticed when I was waxing last weekend that I had a chip at my L front wheel cladding. It was at about 11:00 so a slash guard wouldn't have helped for that one. I took an art brush and put a dab of clear lacquer to seal the chip. I'm also worried about chipping the paint behind the wheels. The only problem is I don't want to force a set of splash guards on to the car. I'm concerned about how they look and having to drill holes. I'm going to wait for molded guards and hope for no more chips. As soon as anyone finds custom fit guards for our "Freebies" let the forum know. Thanx

Got my Freestyle this week - white SEL. I'm lovin' it !

Ford seems to know what I like. I've had foreign cars before but had to sacrafice the creature comforts that domestic makers continue to exceed in. They're always coming up better ideas it seems.
I think Ford has nailed down quality issues and so I'm sold.
I read negative press today saying domestics are losing market share, blah, blah.
Ok, whatever. I'm lovin' my Freestyle.

My SE FWD has been at the dealership since Monday, May 2. Got a call today that the PCM module they had to order came in, and when they test drove it that the check transmission light came back on. So, they are ordering another module on the thought that this one may have been bad as well, should the same thing happen after this one comes in, they will have to replace the transmission.

So, out of 2 weeks of Freestyle ownership, it has been in my driveway for only a week of that time. I was told that, at best, I may have my car back on Wednesday, May 11. Isn't that nice.

When I was called by a Ford district representative, it was the usual "we're confident we can fix it", "we gave you a loaner", blah blah blah. When I asked for a replacement vehicle, I was told that "You don't get to return a house you bought becuase the furnace has something wrong with it." I laughed and said, yeah, but you can live in a house that has a broken furnace, while a car with a broken transmission can't be driven.

Anyhow, they're doing me the gracious favor of reimbursing me for my first month's payment - when I asked why can't it just be eliminated, I got a long winded explanation of why I have to pay it, then a check will be cut somewhere.

I am very upset with this vehicle, and can only laugh about previous posts that brag about the quality of this vehicle - good for them, but pity anyone who has problems. :lemon:

The sales rep called me today with the VIN number for the alphabet edition Freestyle I ordered. He said he should know by Monday the date it will be born.

it seems like a bad door switch. I tried to slam the door close serveral times before the alarm finally only beep once instead of twice which means the door is not closed.

Okay after a lot of back to back comparisons with the Pacifica Touring and Freestyle Limited today, our family finally decided to buy the Freestyle. We both preferred the seats and the interior fit and finish in the Pacifica (some of the interior looks pretty cheap on the Freestyle) and my wife preferred the look of the Pac and myself the look of the Freestyle. Overall however, we both concluded that Freestyle just had so much more usability than the Pac. It was easier to get in the back, had considerably more room (used our stroller to test size) and just had a better layout for storage. Overall the pros of the Freestyle outweighed the pros of the Pac (seats and interior materials).

I want a fully loaded car excluding the DVD player. One dealer in the area has the exact spec but with the DVD player and will meet my target price of $31, 750 on the road (that is about $30,000 before TTL) so they will eat the cost of the DVD system. This is good price, but we are not keen on that specific car - we feel it has some problems.

Other dealers are hitting our target and one has given me $31,650 OTR ($29,750 + TTL). Now I have a bunch of dealers all trying to work out how they can win my business (Its useful that there are about 10 dealers within 15 miles of us :) ) though they will all have to do a dealer swap to get it as my exact spec I want does not exist locally.

I feel I have a good price ($1657 below invoice), and to conclude the transaction I will see if I can get the remote starter accessory and some mats thrown in for free.

As to buying the car I will probably finance it using Ford Credit, but I am now considering leasing if the terms are right. It will be my wife's car and so should not clock up more that 6K miles per year, also it will give me an excuse to get the newer revamp Freestyle in three years if we still like it then (or the Mercury Meta One which I think is very sharp - if the production version looks anything like the concept). If we do regular financing then we'll probably keep the car 5-6 years so as not to worry a Ford's typically dismal 3 year depreciation numbers.

So, any ideas on what Ford Freestyle lease terms should look like? Residuals on a 36 month 12k miles/yr, expected money factor etc?

Probably stick with a typical purchase payment however still interested in lease rates. I like to keep my options open.

    Thanks.

Has anyone bought the rear parcel shelf cargo organizer advertised in the Freestyle accessories guide? I have quickly discovered that I need something like this to put gloves, washer fluid and stuff. The side shelves are not big enough for some things I have.
Also, what does it cost and is it worthwhile?

    Thanks in advance.
  • anotherwagonanotherwagon Member Posts: 301
We ordered the shelf and returned it. It was very expensive (over $200) and just didn't do it for me - I think you could find some better alternatives, not sure where though.
  • lanbabalanbaba Member Posts: 45
I finally removed it following your instruction, but now the floor is realy ugly with three big holes on it.
I tried to find a cover for the three holes, but it seems ford doesn't carry this. Anyone seem similar cover in the audo stores?

    Thanks for the warning.

I'll look around for something that might work and let you know if I find it at a place with a U.S. outlet.

The reception on the radio is very poor.

If I could do it over again I would consider either getting an SE and tossing the radio or seeing if the Audiophille on the Ltd is better. This radio is unacceptable and I may have to toss it and go aftermarket. I'm going to add satellite; if I end up using that the majority of the time then I'll live with the SEL radio.

    Anyone else agree or disagree?
  • mrlizzzardmrlizzzard Member Posts: 31
I have the LTD and the radio is the best OEM I ever owned.AM/FM/CD?MP3's play very wellI have added XM skifi 1 and it plays very well. But I'm older and deafer than most.I like XM but rates are up and they are losing NASCAR and more and more commercials.Serius has a $500 lifetime rate going on now.Put it in your grandkids name and will it to them.I like talk radio and racing on a long drive.XM has that. But the MP3 CD's get great sound and 10 albums on a CD,that's a lota tunes at a low cost.Guess what I'm saying is I don't know how bad the SE radio is,Sat. will help with the programming but not the sound. Some dealers may switch. If I went to an aftermarket stereo store $ 600 would be my limit w/XM.I know I'm cheap.Get the removeable XM or Serius,I use mine in the house everyday with a boombox.

    hope this helps

    I disagree.

I am far from an audiophile, so don't give my opinion too much weight, but I have an SEL and I like the radio because:

    1) I live well outside the city and there aren't any radio stations really close to me,
and a lot of the ones I listen to are 25-50 miles away. In my SEL I can get stations that I want to listen to but haven't always been able to pick up, both AM and FM. When I use the seek function it finds more stations than I am used to getting. This is mostly during the day--I haven't driven the car all that much at night up to now, so I haven't tried to get any really distant AM stations, which I like to do if I am out late.

    2) Haven't noticed static, fading, etc.

    3) The controls are reasonably intuitive, and the steering wheel controls are nice.

In general I think the speakers could use a bit more bass, but that isn't unusual.

Also, this isn't the radio, but the CD player has worked well with the CD's I have in the changer (but they are in there for my daughter, so we play the same ones over and over). Haven't tried any MP3s.

Finally I think the fact that the radio doesn't turn off when you shutoff the engine until you open the door is really nice. I don't know how common that feature is now, but this is the first car I have had that does it, and I love it.
  • northlakesnorthlakes Member Posts: 368
To add to your comments, the tweeters are bright and clear on the SEL. I adjust the front/rear speaker balance about 3 to 4 notches to the rear to compensate. I also have the bass about 3/4ths of the way up, and the treble about two whole notches below that. It gives a solid bass level to my ear.

Some mentioned that road noise can mask the bass. You can turn on the compression (for CDs) and the automatic volume adjust to compensate for the road noise. My reception has been clean and good with local stations and the low power FreshAire radio. The integrated steering wheel audio controls are great, especially MUTE, when you think an emergency vehicle is coming. :shades:

My SEL radio receptions works just great. It's the C.D. I have troubles with. Took a 1600 mile trip and used the radio more because of the problems with the c.d. player. I just got a call from my dealer yesterday and they have my new radio/c.d. player in. I am taking it in tomorrow to get it replaced.
Love the FreeStyle. It is an awesome vehicle. Have seen two in the small town I live. One exactly like mine.

What is an alphabet edition Freestyle? Just curious. Thanks
  • lanbabalanbaba Member Posts: 45
I've got a Limited with the security package, but how can I let all the four doors and the liftgate unlock automatically when I turn off the engine and pull out the key? It currently only unlock the driver's door. I've read thru the manual and can't find this feature. Anyone knows? :confuse:
  • lanbabalanbaba Member Posts: 45
    I'm curious too. :confuse:
  • lumber2lumber2 Member Posts: 184
Wonder if Ford is using the Volvo system, press unlock once for drivers door, twice for all doors
  • 428cj428cj Member Posts: 52
The alphabet addition is the LTD with the CVT, AWD,CD,MP3 and DVD. The ABS is standard.
  • lanbabalanbaba Member Posts: 45
So this is the only way -->> "press the unlock twice"? I'd like to see the feature "pull out the key, all the doors and liftgate unlocks".
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
There are some cars with fobs that open all the doors with one press of a button. People complained (loudly in same cases) that opening all the doors with one press of a button is a safety hazard and they only wanted the driver's door to open initially. (These people must park in dark parking garages a lot?).

It would be nice to have the option of how you wanted to program your fob.

    Steve, Host
  • northlakesnorthlakes Member Posts: 368
I prefer the car to unlock only under my control, but for a quick "unlock all" after I park, I hit the unlock switch on the driver's armrest. You only need to press it once. :shades:
  • saramsaram Member Posts: 34
Okay, I get it now! Did you get a delivery date? You will love your Freestyle. I love mine! :)
  • 428cj428cj Member Posts: 52
I have not received a call with the delivery date yet, but something tells me they will want to close out the transaction in May so I would bet I will have it by June 1st.

I am replacing wife's '98 Sable LS with the Duratec. It has 130K hard in-town miles and only has had tires, 1 battery, shocks, brakes, 1 set of spark plugs and oil changes. Ford even replaced the PVC for free at 100 K (it is mentioned in the owners manual.) It has only had the cheap 85 octane gas available in Colorado. Someone in my office is not quite to 100 K yet on a Camry and has had multiple expensive mechanical and electrical problems including two timing belts.

I have kept all my Fords for well over 100 K and never replaced a timing chain. Who says Japanese cars have more quality? The automotive press must only drive the new vehicles.

    Hi 428cj,

Sounds like you have had some good luck with your cars. It only shows that if you take care of your vehicle, they will take care of you!
We have had good luck with our fords. We have five of them right now. Three work trucks on the road daily and the freestyle and a mustang. Love them all. Well, maybe not the work trucks as much as the fun vehicles! But they do make the money to provide the fun!

You will love your Freestyle, I am sure. We really really like ours.

    Take care :)

Just a short note to say that my journey left an impression. A friend I visited during my recent journey had a buddy who noticed my Freestyle at the curb. That led to the purchase of a Silver Freebie off of a dealer's lot two weeks later. Glad to spread the word... :shades:
  • sj freebiesj freebie Member Posts: 22
I've also had good experiences with my Ford's. My '92 Ranger has 180K, my '76 Bronco has 145K, my '84 Mustang had 180K until it got totaled three years ago. I also put 200K on a '74 Mustang before I gave it away in '92. All with original engines. I just needed to replace the usual components: brakes, water pumps, ball joints, etc. Nothing too expensive. I have high hopes for even better reliability on our new Freestyle. The only issue so far is the CD player skipping. That's what the warranty is for.

I'm restoring a '69 Mach I now (not a 428cj). Maybe I can get another 36 years out of that one too.

Financially, there are a lot of advantages to keeping these vehicles for a long time. At least the initial depreciation is not an issue. They do last if taken care of.

Any advices, suggestions will be appretiated.
I got my freestyle limited at the end of April, and the alarm just makes me really upset, here is the problems:
1> When I exit the vehicle and arm the alarm, sometimes it will sound twice to indicates the door is not closed. I have to close the door for several times to make it only sounds once, and it doesn't matter if I close the door gently or slam it (I haven't figure out which door yet), it just happens randomly.
2> The alarm went off randomly since I got the car, and there is nothing even close to it. I took it to the dealer yesterday, and they just can't find the problem, all they did is reprogrammed it and this morning, it just went off again. I plan to take it to another big ford service shop next week to check it up.
Anyone know any possible causes? The dealer said there is nothing wrong with the switches and the BCM.
     :confuse:  :lemon:

    alarm problems:
No advice to give you, just commiseration. Mine has done that twice and it is unnerving and the neighbors suddenly shun you. I have not figured it out and didn't bother with the dealer. How is it that these people deal with cars all day long and so often know so little? I get much better advice on this forum--although this alarm problem seems to have stumped people here, too. In all the maze of wires and crap in modern cars, who knows what little gremlins are in there buggering up the works??? Good luck--I feel your pain!

I finished my first tank of gas the other day and checked the mileage. I had said I wouldn't do it until 1,000, but couldn't resist: 22 in mixed city/freeway. A friend drove the car and said he didn't know what some people were talking about in complaining about power. Me either. The CVT makes the driving experience more refined feeling. Off the line, nobody will get whiplash, but in town and on the highway, the powertrain is very responsive and it's easy to exceed the limit. I even like the muted baritone growl of the engine in reving it. I haven't taken it beyond 4500 rpms yet- no need to- and since that is the torque peak, it feels good there and never strained. The road noise on some surfaces could be more subdued. Everyone who sees it comments very favorably. And the ingress/egress is superb.

Perhaps someone will market a Freestyle headrest rocker for those who like the head-snap feel on acceleration. :shades:

Sorry, but you will never get a hitch with a 2" receiver for the Freestyle (maybe the 3.5 in 2007)
A 2" hitch is designed for more weight capacity than the Freestyle drivetrain can handle and putting one on would void the warranty. Manufacturers will not do it.

The best you'll get is a 1 1/4" hitch and a 1 1/4" x 2" adapter. (even then you'll get warnings but at leats it can be done)
  • saramsaram Member Posts: 34
I have added the vent visors, bug shield and husky floor liners. The scuff plates look really cool. Also might have the Freestyle custom pin-striped by the guy we have letter and stripe our work trucks. He does an excellent job.
Took my car to the dealer yesterday and had the 6cd stereo changed out. No more skipping or bad disc errors!! I will use it more over the next few days just to make sure it solved the problems.
Can you put seat covers over the front seats since they have the side impact airbags? I had a Escape and in the owners manual it stated not to put any type of seat cover over the front seats as the side impact airbags deploy from them. And on the Freestyle it has the little airbag tag on the sides of the seats???
The Husky liners really save wear and tear on the carpet and mats. Great for use in the winter when you have wet feet or snow on your shoes. It holds the water inside the liner.
You all take care and keep on Freestyling!!

    Hi all,

I'm looking to upsize from my beloved Audi A4 wagon (girls need more rear seat legroom) and am cross-shopping the Freestyle with the Odyssey and Sienna. Unfortunately, none offers everything that I want. The big omissions from the Ford are the lack of stability control and HID headlights. I can live without the HIDs, but giving up a safety feature that I currently have is a little bothersome. Has anyone driven vehicles witht the stability control before their Freestyle? Have you noticed a difference in foul weather?

    Thanks in advance

I am thinking about purchasing a Freestyle Limited and concerned about the CVT Transmission and the local sales rep was too much help in answering my questions. After reading your forum for the last couple of weeks I thought I could pick your brains. I read the following article: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/content/11098616361346011107/
which says Ford is going to drop the CVT Transmission in the 500 next year because of poor sales and I was wondering if that means the Freestyle will get the 6 speed transmission. My main concern is how the CVT Transmission will hold up over time and the rep could tell me how long Ford has been testing the transmission. His answer was to buy the extended warranty.
  • lumber2lumber2 Member Posts: 184
In 07MY the Freestyle/500/Montego is reportedly going to evolve and add a 3.5 litre engine with a jointly developed GM/Ford six speed auto. The 3.0/CVT combo staying around for some time.
CVT has been used on Fords in Europe for some time. Other companies using CVT's include Nissan, MINI, Audi and probably some I don't know about.
GM's own design was a big failure.
The Freestyle CVT box is built at a plant that certainly was (?is) a joint venture with ZF, whose engineering I respect and products can be found in many vehicles from Ford, jag, BMW, Land Rover, MB etc
Stability control. Our xc70 without it is solid as a rock and that uses the same haldex awd system as the freestyle. Unless you drive like a lunatic, should be very difficult to trigger stability control.
  • 428cj428cj Member Posts: 52
The CVT adds 50 free horses and has been proven to be very reliable. Any decision to drop it is for marketing concerns and not reliability. Some people just have to feel a car go through the gears.

Your Ford dealer has a Source Book that goes into detail on the CVT. Go to the Freestyle section and read about it. It is very impressive. 400,000 of a less-beefy CVT from ther same manufacturer was installed in the Audi with no returns.
  • bruneau1bruneau1 Member Posts: 468
There are always rumors. Ford has announced that all 500 SE sedans will use the CVT, as well as all AWD. There are no plans at this point to use a 6 speed in the Freestyle. Having driven both transmissions in the 500, I can tell you this: the 6 speed is a little faster off line, but its constant shifting to maintain power is an irritation and produces more varying noise. We who are already driving Freestyles hope that the CVT remains and is reliable. I would guess that if Ford does produce a more powerful engine for the Freestyle in the future, there might be a change in transmission. I did buy the extended warranty at a very good price. Long live the CVT, or the next time it's a Honda or Toyota.

I traded in a 2002 A4 for a LTD Freestyle. We live in heavy snow area. Freestyle works just as good. Both vehicles had 4 snow tires. You will love the extra room. Gas costs work out to about the same. Road noise much less.

I am patiently waiting for my on order LTD FWD and was wondering about the two types of vent visors. Ford Accessories has the stick-on kind and Auto Vent Shade has the inside-channel type. Is one better than the other? I have the Ford ones on my 2000 Sable Wagon and they are okay but did leak a little and I fixed it with some silicon very carefully. Seems to me that the inside-channel ones would be better, unless they create window seal problems. Does anyone have any experience with the inside-channel ones?
  • northlakesnorthlakes Member Posts: 368
Yesterday, I saw a Blue SEL Freebie pulling up to my building at work. Out popped a colleague. He has had his for a month and loves it. His only issue is the need to close the doors harder than on his last car. We hope to compare notes one of these days. :shades:
  • tim156tim156 Member Posts: 308
I purchased a set of In-Channel from parts-world.com which were manufactured by Lund. The word LUND was printed on the unit which bothered me (I don't shill for no-one) and there were some flaws in the plastic. I attempted to cover the Lund letters up with some gloss black paint and a fine bristled brush, which worked fine but up close I could see the paint and brush stroke. I decided to go with the Genuine Ford Accessories side window vents. I had a heck of a time removing the in channel vents, that adhesive strip was strong. It pulled out the window rubber which I was able to push it back in. Anyway, the front in channel vents fit fine but the rear window hit the front of the vents on the back doors. I had my doubts at first but am very happy with the fit and look of the Ford vents. I was worried about adhesion but the tape seems fine. I was also worried about water, snow and ice in the winter. The seal seems tight so we'll see. After installing both, I'd go with the Ford units.

." Having driven both transmissions in the 500, I can tell you this: the 6 speed is a little faster off line, but its constant shifting to maintain power is an irritation and produces more varying noise. "

Bruneau the 6speed auto you tested in the 500 was the Aisin tranny made by a Toyota subsidiary but I think they were talking about the forthcoming GM/Ford 6 speed tranny mentioned in items #3270,3271 which will be mated to the new 3.5L engine.
Although I'm still waiting for the chance to order a Limited FWD in MY'06 I wouldn't mind if Ford introduces this new 6speed one year sooner as I believe it is for HD application. As usual my timing is the pits and I can't wait for '07.
Glad to hear you have no issues with your ride. ENJOY! :)
