    Car rentals influence my buying habits by helping me cross cars off my list, not add cars to the list.

    My college-age sister just did this, rented a Fiat 500 before buying one.

    Like greenpony, renting helped me exorcise some cars from my list. But finding the cars I wanted to try was a challenge and involved hanging out at the airport. No agency was especially helpful in trying to help me find anything on that list.
