I'd hope that BMW hasn't lost their vibe to the point that 40 mph is the only "sweet spot". That might imply less-than-perfect engine/transmission calibration -- hardly worthy of the moniker "ultimate driving machine".

The idea of a sweet spot for this engine seems misplaced - I don't think there is a engine in production today that has a wider powerband.

Ford's twin turbo 3.5 V6 does. From just above idle to redline.
