    IIRC these revved to about 7-7.5k. A couple of my buddies used to road-rally similar Escorts with a different powertrain. The rules in their class required a pushrod or SOHC 8V engine with a single twin-choke carb and the tyres were limited to 185/60. Even so, with some careful work you could make a quick and surprisingly civilised little car. Replacing the rear end arrangement of multi-leaf springs with single leaf springs, angled track bars and a Panhard rod greatly improved the ride and traction. Hardcore folk went to a three link or five link rear with coils at the rear. Bilstein shocks were de rigeur. Seam welding the shell and fitting a strut brace tightened the handling greatly too.

    Even though no one on this side of the Atlantic knows that legend at all?
    Thats probably only true if you live in the US and then even if you have ever heard the word "rally" you know about the RS, 1600GT, Mexico etc. (Also, I think the Lotus Escort which preceded the RS was also 16 valve. It may have said Lotus on the valve covers but was the same Kent engine block).

    Sorry Guys, This is not a BDA RS1600 Escort, but a very good replica using NOT a Cosworth BDA but a Ford Ztec engine with a cam cover that makes it look like a BDA, And the Lotus twin cam Escort that the RS1600 replaced had the Lotus twin cam engine based on a Ford block but was only 8 valve not 16 like the RS1600BDA

    Mexicos and RS1600s were already seam-welded at the factory. The shells were strengthened to Type 49 spec at Halewood even before they were shipped to AVO.¹
