Honda announced it's new plant for Greensburg, IN.

Another 200K US built Hondas soon will be rolling out. They're considering building the Fit and Civic there.

Cool videos although the Smart passing the Freightliner at the end freaked me a bit.

Here's a wild crash video that shows how well it holds up in a severe crash:

    http://youtube.com/w/Crash-Test---Smart%2C-Opel-Corsa-%28Comparativa%29?v=Q3uv9a- 4t0rM&search=crash%20test

Note also in the European video on that site above that in a head-on crash with a bigger Benz the door still opens.

Subaru Legacy and Impreza sales gave Subaru a strong sales month. Impreza sales up 12%.

That does it - big kid gets a Subaru when the time comes.

Can't remember ever having to cut into one in my career - I'll have to look at the drill field this week & see if we have any Subaru training cars to cut - the guys could be in for a surprise!

May have to talk to our wreck supplier & see if they have any they can donate for demolition.

Happy 4th, everyone - stay safe.

    Cheers!

Also have to take a moment to throw out a little PR congratulating my favorite car dealership. Carter Subaru was recently honored by SOA for 30 years of "outstanding sales and service." Way to go, folks!

When DW gets an idea to purchase something, don't get in her way. Per her wishes (and she ordered it, etc.), we now have this in our helicopter landing pad patio and I was out simmering in it for a while, instead of going to the chat. :shades:

    Brian,

You can do both with wireless! :P

    Jim
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
I have a T43 with builtin wireless and I can connect my Sprint PCS phone and use the wireless modem when I can't get a wired or wireless connection. However, I can't convince myself that using the computer while I'm in the bubbly water is a good thing. If I'm on the T43, it's most always due to me doing something at work, and I'd rather not work while relaxing in the tub!

I do check my email on the phone though.

and am still jet lagged- don't know when to sleep and when to wake up!

I missed the chat by about 5 min- I was outside doing yardwork and totally lost track of time (as if I'm not already confused!)

Some observations about cars in Korea- they build Hyundai's very well. I rode around in some taxis and despite the hard use and bumpy and pothole ridden roads, the cars had very little in the way of rattles and noises, even the ones a few years old. Impressive. They have some super luxurious cars that don't make it to the states too- one has a little camera at the nose of the car that lets you see left and right before you creep out into a blind intersection. Neat.

They also have direct rail injection diesels. Riding around in one if it didn't have a badge on the outside I wouldn't have known it. Quiet, comfortable, smooth, with decent power. Diesels sure have come a long way.

Lots of expensive cars running around- MBs, BMWs, Porsches, Bentlys, even a Lamborghini- Korea taxes them over 100% so even a MB or BMW easily becomes a $2-300K car! :surprise:

On the home front, I get home to find a ding on my rear bumper! I don't even have license plates yet! I'm going to see if I can buff it out and use a little touch up paint. I guess it was a matter of time but still. . .

Hope everyone had a good 4th! Trying to catch up on all the posts!

Thanks Colin. Nah, my wife took it into work! There's a certain amount of irony in the fact that I get a car my wife can drive and she's the one with it when it gets dinged! :D

You'd think they could make ding-proof bumpers!

I was late because I had to make a quick run to the store to send some vitamins to Brazil for my mom.

Any how, hot tub, eh? How much? A friend just got one, ended up costing about $8 grand with the electrical install.

I didn't realize this but all you need is a 220 volt outlet, right? No plumbing, his just fills up with a hose.

    -juice
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
You can get a cheaper tub, but yeah, with everything this one is right in that $ area.

220v 50amp circuit is what it needs. We had a electric stove with 220v already and a friend of ours was getting rid of their gas stove (for free). So instead of adding another panel to our electrical (the main panel is full already) or going to 200 amp service, I opted to do the stove swap for far less $$$.

Fillup took about 50 minutes via the outside garden hose. Initial heating to 100F took 4.5 hours. The unit is fully insulated, with the motor on the outside of the tub to allow for that insulation. Nice and quiet, though with the "bubbles" on, it's hard to hear anyone outside of the tub. Had a cool LED light that can cycle through colors or stay stationary on one color.

We've been using it almost every night. The intent is to continue using it in the winter as well.

Here's a few pictures from the initial install, including a "before" pic:

Colin- you have a good memory. No, can't blame this one on her- someone did the parallel parking by feel where the 2 license plate bolts scratched my bumper.

Brian- nice hot tub! Can we come try it out? :D

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Reminds me of his. We just tried it out this weekend. He has a 2nd home in Salisbury, near the beach where our condo is.

You think they could piggy-back off the 220 volt outlet that hooks up to my clothes dryer? Or would it need its own dedicated power?

    -juice
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
juice - it would need it's own dedicated circuit just like your central air.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Yes, it should be on a seperate circuit. I originally thought I'd *have* to update to 200amp service to fit the tub circuit and the existing wiring. Doing that update would cost at least a few thousand around here, as virtually all the wiring would have to be upgraded. Moving the 220v wiring from the kitchen to the outside was minor and allowed us to keep the existing 100amp service (and a full panel).

200amp service is the norm in new houses around here. The tub has to be 10ft away from overhead powerlines (may be able to see that in the pics). Our original intent was to place the tub on the grass directly next to where it is now on the patio - the tub would have been about 8ft away from the overhead power lines. And it has to be at least 2ft away from the house. The walk to the tub steps is just over 10ft.

Looks like a nice tub! And you can shoot baskets while you're relaxing... cool! :D
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Sure, or tip back some cold ones ;) I was drinking some margaritas tonight (or is that mar-na-gritas). BTW, what is with the lighter colored emotorcons?

This is one case where I've always liked to have one, but DW took the initiative to actually do it. Our water bill hasn't gone up but a few $ (meaning we've been 400 gallons or so under the minimum billing amount for quite a while). Getting use to the gas range has been an adjustment, we both grew up on gas oven/ranges but our house came with the electric one. How that electric one radiated heat, wow. The gas one cools so much quicker.

  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
Lighter colored emotorcons? How many marnagritas did you have?! :P

Really, though, to me they all appear the same dark blue they've always been. :confuse:
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
really, they aren't affecting me that bad. Here's a screen shot of how the emotorcons have lightened.

After 15 years and 240,000 miles, our FWD '91 Legacy L sedan left our family two weeks ago. The radiator cracked and the significant overheating possibly damaged the head gasket or cylinder head. It was a tough decision, but looking at up to $2500 in repairs, we decided to put that money toward a replacement instead.

We picked up an '06 Legacy Special Edition sedan, automatic, in Atlantic Blue Pearl, with subwoofer/amplifier and all-weather mats as the only options. Sales price was $18,900 before taxes, unbeatable!

What a great vehicle, too! I feel like I'm driving something much more expensive. It's our all-time favorite Subaru color (sorry it's the last year for it), and the two-tone interior is sharp. With the light taupe cloth, though, I spent a few hours Scotchguarding everything as soon as we got home. Throttle response is amazing compared to the old one and to our '04 Outback. After driving the new Legacy for a day, I drove the Outback, and actually checked to see if the parking brake was still on, it felt so restrained in comparison. The moonroof helps it feel more upscale - it's hard to believe this is essentially the base model Legacy.

I feel much better knowing the old Legacy won't end up in a junkyard somewhere right away - we sold it to a mechanic at our dealership for a few hundred bucks. Many of the folks at the dealership know the old car, and were asking about it while we were in selecting our new one, and the mechanic has worked on it many times. He'll fix it up for his daughter. I'm disappointed we won't see it hit 300,000, but at least I know it's got a good home where it still has a good shot at hitting that mark.

Here are a few pics, with our '91, both side-by-side at the dealership, and the '06.

I'll post another pic in a week or so, when we'll have had the windows tinted and the mudguards installed.

  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Congrats on the new ride Jeff! Sounds like you got a killer deal! I was talking to Joe a few weeks ago when I was looking at OBs- he gave me a very tempting offer- it just wasn't the model I wanted. It's a great car, Jeff, and it is a much more expensive car than you bought it for! :D

BTW, where were those pics taken? Is that across from Alki? (bottom pic)

    Congrats again, Jeff!

Reminds me of Eddie Murphy on SNL doing his James Brown imitation and singing the song "Hot Tub"...a true classic Murphy skit.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Yep, "Celebrity Hot Tub Party" is a good one. I found a MP3 of the song and played it the first time we used the tub. There's a WMV of it out there too.

Tom, thanks. Top pic was taken on Ediz Hook in Port Angeles (one of the world's longest sandspits), and the bottom pic is from the top of Rucker Hill in Everett, looking north along the waterfront.

I see the lighter ones, too. At least here at work.

Jeff: I won't tell my wife, she'd be real jealous. That's our favorite color, and she wants an auto sedan next. She'd probably want the limited but the SE is the better value. Congrats!

I could get her that and then drive her Legacy wagon, but I really prefer the Forester over the Legacy. It's getting a bit long in the tooth but Sandy refuses to break! ;)

Yo Bob, since you're the resident tow expert ;) , I was wondering if I could get your opinion on the feasibility of towing a 5000 lb trailer with a 4.0L JGC. The trip is 1800 miles and while the JGC is rated to tow 5000 lbs, it only has the class III hitch (not the HD radiator & tranny cooler). Of course anybody else with towing experience feel free to chime in :D

    -Frank
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Frank, does it have a factory tow package, or just an aftermaket class III hitch? If it's the factory package I would think you should be okay.

Again, there's the never-ending trailer brake issue. I believe the Jeep is only rated to tow 1000 if there are no trailer brakes. Check the owner's manual to be sure.
