Mazda needs the diesel to help increase the average purchase price of its vehicles. The low-end, low-margin 3 and CX5 account for over 2/3s of Mazda sales. The other models in the Mazda lineup don't sell worth beans.

dagmar3, they also need the introduction of the diesel to be flawless. They've had a few issues with too much diesel making it into the crankcase on the initial ones. Reprogramming the system seems to be helping but may affect the emissions on it. -- also I'd have to say the CX5 probably has some more decent margins than the 3 for them and was the vehicle that put Mazda into the black recently.
