    What is its depth? I could see a shallow space for phones and wallets, but the USB port infers that it's deep enough to plug in a thumb drive and still put the screen back up? Or is that only used for firmware updates?

    It's deeper than the photo suggests. There is also a small LED light that comes on inside the compartment when the door opens. The USB slot is hooked into the media system, so you can plug in your phone or a USB stick. (The USB slot operates exactly like the two USB slots in the center console.)

    Every car post that mentions secret compartments reminds me of some old SNL skit about some box or hollowed-out book, the purpose was "to put your weed in it".

    Our 2014 Malibu has this too. The "box" on the Malibu is about 4" wide, 6" high and around 8" deep.

    No light or usb port, though.
