Please offer a 4-door version. My wife will let be buy one if it has 4 doors. And don't forget the manual and Dynaudio system.

More diesel options please - like Passat wagon TDI?

A friend of mine in Korea has owned a GTD for 2 years. I really like the idea of GTI goodness with diesel fuel economy. Bring it over here!

I've been waiting for this GTD, performance handling and economy.
Now PLEASE no vinyl seats as in VW's other diesels. They supposed to be convincing leather substitues - BS. Had it in an Audi and they're just fancy vinyl, meaning they don't breathe like cloth and you'll be soaking wet in your seat on a hot day for 10-15 minutes before the A/C cools and dries things down enough !
I'll bet VW could sell even more diesels if they didn't pimp up the price by making them upgraded models - it takes about 150K miles to make up the extra cost compared to a gas powered 30mpg equivalent - you do the math. It's not a good deal.

Great news for those of us who want an economical daily driver that's still a lot of fun to drive. I'll be honest; however, I'm not excited about the next gen for the US being build in Mexico. Whether it's true or not, there's a real quality perception amongst many US VW fanatics for the vehicles build in N. America (esp. Mexico) vs. those build in Europe.

170 hp, ok but if it did 200 just like the GTI it would rock.

@cjasis, Ford builds the Fusion in Mexico, and it is a rated as a reliability leader. Maybe VW can do the same!

Good luck ever getting 30mpg out of a GTI if you drive it enjoyably ... the 42 MPG you get out the GTD will allow you to have some fun and still get great miles.. not to mention diesel easily last 600k+ miles of longevity .. gasoline wont...

Diesel is currently a huge 70 cents a gallon more than regular where I live, so there goes the savings.

This is pretty much the ideal car. It has lots of space, it's fast, it's really fun to drive, it not very expensive, it has top notch build quality, it's comfortable, and it will get well over 50mpg on the highway. My significantly heavier and less aerodynamic MkVI TDI averages 43mpg and gets 55mpg on the highway compared to an EPA rating of 34 combined and 41mpg highway. If this gets a 50mpg EPA highway rating it will have no trouble getting 60mpg on the highway in the real world.

What's the difference between this and the Golf TDI? I know this is a new diesel engine, but is it replacing the current 140 hp version we currently have? Considering the current Golf TDI is already a bit more expensive than the GTI, where will this GTD fit in the pricing lineup? I'd love it if VW made the GTD the hot, pricier version and let us have a TDI equipped like a base Golf for ~$22K instead of the current $26K starting price.

    cjasis,
I'm pretty sure VW's past reliability woes have been due to engineering and parts quality, not country of assembly. The MKV Jetta has been built in Mexico and gets higher reliability ratings than the German built GTI.

If it comes, I will be right out there to buy the first batch. Everything a car geek like me wants: hatchback for utility, moster torque/good HP, moderately luxurious feel, and great gas mileage! I really hope diesels take off in this country

Oh, and the comment about Fusion reliability... If you research a little further, you will notice that the auto tranny in the 4cyl and 3.0L 6 is notorious for failure in like 50k miles. That is a big buck expense. You have to spend to get the dependable Fusions: the 3.5L V6 or the hybrid. Nice handling car; but after driving, I would trust that tranny as far as I could throw it.

How does this hit 152 with on 185 hp? Diesels usually get real slugish over 60 so this must take a long time to get to 150, and what is the point in the USA? Diesel fuels costs 40 cents a gallon more than premium where I live now too..
A new Accord 4 cyl. sports with manual goes 0-60 in 6.6 according to Edmunds so that is quicker than this and is only 23k to start.

VW diesel engines are known to last a long time, but overall VWs are super expensive to maintain, and the rest of the car will fall apart well before then anyway.

Mein Gott! Ich muss dieses auto haben!!!

Okay, my German may be a bit rusty. But for the love, FOR THE LOVE!, please bring this car here. If you do, I will buy one when it arrives. If you don't, I will most likely get a used IS350 at the end of the year. Dass ist nich schwer!

And yes, the 4-door manual, with Dynaudio.

As a Toyota EMPLOYEE (and vehicle owner), I'm willing to 'switch' allegiances, 'IF' VW North America brings the GTD with AWD/4motion here to the U.S.! 2/3's of our country gets snow (not to mention skier's/snowboarders/outdoors enthusiasts), so AWD should be a 'No-Brainer' option...!!! I'm positive, VW would sell EVERY one it built!!!!

I'm ready with my deposit!!! Need an automatic since an automatic is all she can handle!!! Maybe the uninformed Americans who voted for our current White House occupant will finally figure out that diesel is the future. A real threat to farmers though, since 45% of all corn is grown for ethynol. Diesels will put a lot of farmers out of business. Expect a lot of opposition from the left if VW begins to flood the market with fuel saving vehicles like these, especially if they're priced right.
