    Just finished my own round-trip road trip from L.A. to Santa Fe and back. I-40 may not have the soul of Route 66, but it's still a damn fine piece of highway in certain places. But for nostalgiacs, I cannot recommend La Posada Inn in Winslow, AZ highly enough. It's a finely-restored old Fred Harvey hotel on the Santa Fe Railroad (now BNSF) line. Fantastic stuff -- Google it.

    Regarding Tucumcari appearing to be a town suffering from being bypassed by an interstate, it sounds more like you're describing Cisco, UT.
