    Another tip: It is my understanding that it is important to act quickly to mend a chip in the winter because cold weather causes cracks to spread more easily.

    Agreed. That's why it's good to have a repair kit on hand. You can find them on sites like https://crackeraser.com. This way you're not letting the crack sit and spread.
