    I wonder how many are told by their folks NOT to get a permit because it would cause a huge jump in insurance rates.

    WOW, I found this kind of amazing. At 16 1/2 I was driving as all of my friends.
    Of course back then you could buy a shiitebox for 200 bucks. Now in my state of Mass. not many cars under say 3 grand will pass an inspection and smog test. Tires need to be in good condition. None of my high school and college beaters would be allowed on the road today. Well except down South and some other states...
