"But, diesel fuel costs more than gasoline. The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report on Wednesday pegged the average price for a gallon of diesel fuel at $3.94 versus $3.55 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline."

That's not a fair comparison since there isn't a single Mercedes model that uses "regular" gasoline. Every Mercedes requires premium gas, which costs more than diesel.

Your comparison should be with the 535d and the A6 TDI. 328d and Passat are not direct competitors. E250 has significantly better mileage, but is also significantly slower than the BMW and Audi.

BTW, REALLY want a 3 way comparison of those models. None of the automotive press has stepped up so far.
