on the other hand, you guys did burnouts on an engine that wasn't broken-in yet.

Sweet, a "cover your [non-permissible content removed] from litigation"-ometer. RE: deep thermal shock tests, these are really extreme... nobody in the real world drives at WOT with an engine at -20 deg coolant temps. It's a pretty good way to stress seals and gaskets.

Of course, now that everything's electronic, wouldn't it be cool if the main redline indicator adjusted to engine conditions?

I don't think this feature is there solely due to coolant temp issues. It will also help with oil temp & oil pressure.

If someone starts a cold engine & floors the throttle, I'm not worried about the coolant temp. I'm worried about not having proper oil lubrication throughout the engine. Capping the engine rpm is this situation will help prevent engine damage due to lack of oil.

So is this a bonafide variable rev limiter, or barely-noticeable guideline that puts no limit on driver stupidity?

I'm enjoying the Vette posts much better than the Dart posts

I like the "orange" and "yellow" sections as well. Note to GM and other manufacturers of the future. This is a great feature for a virtual display. The redline could actually appear at different RPM based on engine temperature.

I believe my father's 2007 BMW 5-series has a moving redline depending on engine and external temperatures, using a little skinny LCD that runs around the edge of both the speedo and tach. See here, look down by the fixed redline and you can see what I mean: http://images.gtcarlot.com/pictures/70860419.jpg It also marks the cruise control set speed this way, which seems like a pretty elegant solution.

This feature is great and I have it on my 2001 m5.

If you rev the engine past the "cold" redline will the driver info center give you the "ENGINE OVERSPEED" warning? Many GM cars give you this warning if you rev the engine past redline.
