Small SUV - best cargo space?

I am in the market for a small SUV. I'm very unsure of which one to look into. It will most likely be used, 1-3 years old, as I think most of the new ones are going to be out of the price point I'm hoping to stay in (20-25k).

I love the mid size SUV's or larger, but I know I need to be mindful about gas and still want to get decent MPG's, so I think that I need to stick with a small SUV, as I put a decent amount of miles on per year (a bit over 15k per year).

If we do go new, I think the only one that would fit into our price range would be the Mazda CX-5. I'm concerned that this one doesn't have enough cargo space though. I *love* the Ford Escape and Hyundai Santa Fe Sport (new) but I don't think these will be feasible in terms of price range.

Is there any way to find out which small SUV's have the most cargo space? As in actual measurements or numbers? I can't seem to find this info, despite my googling.

I have also been looking into the GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox but don't really care for the Equinox.

Recommendations? It also needs to have AWD or 4WD.

We list cargo capacity in the specs of most vehicles here, usually with all seats in place and the maximum.

So, for example, a 2012 Escape has 29.2 cu. ft. with the seats up and 66.3 cu. ft. maximum.

The 2015 Escape comes in with 34.3 cu. ft. with the seats up and 68.1 cu. ft. maximum.

A 2015 CX-5 has 34.1 cu. ft. with the seats up and 64.8 cu. ft. maximum.

Finding "the" numbers is one thing; sometimes the usable room is often more a function of how wide the hatch opening is or how high above the floor the ceiling is. Some people want to know how many ping pong balls you can fit in a car; others are more interested in golf club fit or how many cases of beer will slide in.

We get the numbers from the automakers btw and they all seem to measure stuff a bit differently.
