Over filling engine with oil

Hi ,
I have a 1983 LADA . My cars engine oil level dropped so I filled my engine with engine oil again . I filled it over the maximum level by mistake . Now the exhaust has white smoke which is very significant when I first start the engine , then just goes after a minute form the first start . If I push the accelerator pedal at higher rpms while car is in idle it gets out this white smoke but in fewer amount than while starting for the engine .
The question is : Is this white smoke resulting from the burn of the excess oil present which will eventually disappear after all excess engine oil vaporizes or did I hurt my engine ?
