    There are uses for the volume in and around the spare tire if you don't have a subwoofer. I usually keep spray window cleaner, paper towels, and various Armor-all wipes packs in mine--anything of suitable size that's not metal or hard enough to rattle. When I return from a multi-week car-camping trip, it holds as much dirty laundry as I can compress to fit inside--usually socks around the outside of the tire and underwear inside the tire. And of course, many cars today don't have a spare tire at all, just underfloor storage.
