2002 Buick LeSabre Limited will not go past 20 mph

I have a 2002 Buick LeSabre limited what is happening when I Drive it it will not accelerate above 20 miles per hour but once in awhile after driving it for about 5 or 10 minutes it acts fine the check engine light is on but I have not had a chance to get it scanned for codes could the speed sensor be bad or do you think the transmission may be bad someone also said that the trans filter may be clogged

You have to get the codes scanned to get the clues to the problem. There are many things it could be. The box stores for auto parts will usually scan for you. You want them to give you the P0000 numbers that come up. Don't let them say well this number indicates this part needs to be replaced here. Or a friend with a code reader can do the scan for the codes for you and you look them up on the internet. Remember that the particular symptom may not be from the part that it at first seems to be. Don't throw parts until you have a true idea of the problem.

My first thought is to check the MAF sensor. That can be done by disconnecting the connector to the MAF sensor and then starting the engine to see if the car will run better.

If the engine light is not flashing yellow, I am not sure why you'd have a problem getting above a certain speed. But the engine may be in "limp home" mode where it keeps running but only in a way that protects the engine but will get your car moving to safety.
