To launch this discussion, my car (I've never owned a truck, SUV or minivan) purchases have been close to evenly split between new and used, depending on vehicle preference, purpose and the value proposition.
Currently our household has three cars: a 1999 Acura TL, bought new; a 2007 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro automatic, purchased from a private seller in 2010, with 34,000 miles and a remaining factory warranty to 50,000 miles (which we reached by the warranty expiration); a 2013 Fiat 500 Pop with 5-speed manual, bought new.
We've gotten good service from all three, although the Audi's engine had new rings and associated parts replaced, due to excessive oil consumption, shortly after the warranty expired. Audi finally covered the repair completely because I had lodged the complaint well before the warranty expired, and had abundant documentation to support my claim. All maintenance had been done on schedule by the dealer from which the car was purchased, and the car had never been abused. There was an obvious problem because a visible cloud of smoke appeared in the rear view mirror when the accelerator was depressed even half way, when merging on to an entrance ramp, for example. The car runs perfectly now, and neither uses nor leaks oil.
