I am thinking about buying a new tacoma, and just
heard about factory installed trd supercharger
option. Can anybody tell me more about this? Is it
worth the extra money, does it affect the well
known reliability of the toyota? What are the
performance increases, numbers? Any information
will be greatly appreciated. Also, is this an
option on 4x4 models? Would you recommend it, if so
for what reasons? If not, why?

Why don't you just buy a lightning like me. 360hp 440lbs tourque ,reduced compression, forged pistons.I posted a 13.82 1/4 mile factory. once I get my nitrous installed I'll have to start wearing my old ccm 3 peice hockey helmet.

"...Why don't you just buy a lightning like me?"

That would mean I'd have to own a Ford, and that's not happening in my lifetime.

PS: Will that hockey helmet fit over your tinfoil hat? Better check first, Beerlitz.

If we ever ARE in a war, I hope we don't have to rely on your Ford F-150.

As honest as I can be about this topic, the Tacoma, with its well known, documented V6 head gasket problems, is the very last vehicle in the world I would consider for a blower.

On the flip side, like Barlitz notes, factory horsepower is the cheapest. If Toyota offers a blower option for the Tacoma, it's probably your best insurance that you'll have a good head gasket. No one would intentionally be so remiss.

I had this discussion with another person in another room. Are 4x4 trucks now becoming race cars? How does the light rearend handle this? This S/C makes no sense, its all a marketing gimmick. Oh, by the way, I will NEVER own a Toyota either!

    Miker7649:

I have a 1999 TRD 4x4 Tacoma Limited with a TRD supercharger installed. I installed the kit myself 3 weeks ago when the truck had 11000 miles on the clock. My cousin helped me with the installation as he had already installed one on his identical Tacoma. There is definetatly some power under the hood now! My truck can easily dust any 4x4 I've seen and I smoked a 5.0 Mustang last week. My cousin tows a 20 ft. ski boat uphill on I-5 at 80 passing people. The rumors of 15 mpg are true if you drive like my cousin. My Tacoma averaged 20 mpg before, and average now is 18 mpg, with my foot frequently pushed to enjoyment. My only advice is to install the supercharger on a vehicle with over 600 mi. and less than 1500 mi. It can take up to 2000 mi. for the computer to adjust to the kit on a truck with some mileage like mine. My cousin reported no surging on his (600 mi. on vehicle) like I hade on mine for 1200 mi. after installation. The Toyota headgasket problem mentioned in some of the other postings only applies to the 3.0 v6 and 1995 3.4 v6. If only the domestics could claim only 1 recall; instead you'll find page after page(look about every month in a major newspaper for domestic recall headlines). Also, the optional locking differential is well worth the money. Memorial Day weekend I had the pleasure of towing a Jimmy out of a snow bank after his excellent domestic 4-wheel drive system left him hiking with only 1 front and 1 back wheel spinning helplessly in the snow. I'm a Ford fan, but Toyota's are legendary for a reason.

I was wondering on the supercharger you installed yourself, does that void your warranty if something happens to your engine.. and also there may be a recall on your tundra and the lexus (same engine), fuel line can leak causing engine fire you may want to contact your dealer, my brother who is a salesman said there may be a recall.

On owner installed systems, the supercharger carries a 1 year, unlimited mileage warranty. This does not affect the 60000 mile powertrain warranty the truck came with. On dealer installed systems, the supercharger is warranted for the remaining powertrain warranty. Having seen the quality of my dealer's service work, I decided to install the system myself and roll the dice on the shorter supercharger warranty. I won't even let them change the oil.

How about the transmission can that handle the extra horsepower and tourque or do you need to do some work on that.

The TRD SC is way overkill in a lightweight truck like the Tacoma, IMHO. Even for a 4x4. But hey, if you like peeling rubber, enjoy the fun. :-)

I really think Toyota intended the kit for the T-100 or 4-Runner. On the Tundra, you're better off spending the $3000 on the V8, unless like me you can't live with an automatic. In which case, buying a V6 5sp and add the SC is the only way to get garbanzo torque with a stick shift.

I applaud Toyota for even offer this upgrade - in kit form AND with warranty. I mean, 1yr and unlimited on the SC even if Homer Simpson installed it and NO affect on factory warranty. It shows just how confident Toyota is with the reliability of their powertrain.

Or how few they actually expect to sell.

Just saw the TRD Supercharger kit in the Performance catalog. Apparently, Toyota is selling the kits through 3rd party now. This would mean that some of them might start to discount them. Good news. I wish Nissan would do a performance kit as well.

I saw this website posted on another message board last night. I haven't seen many sites with prices for the supercharger, but from what I've seen this is the lowest.

Has anyone with the SC towed anything with the truck? I wonder how the transmissions hold up with that much torque and hp over time. Does the transmission take the extra power well?

Reason I ask is that I can't believe Toyota is providing warranty on the SC when its not oem equip.
