I am searching for a car, but am struggling as to where I should start. I need a car that is 4WD or AWD. I would like some sort of SUV or similar type vehicle. I am searching for a vehicle that is 1-3 years old as I wish to buy a slightly used car to save on overall price. Safety is extremely important to me as this vehicle will be used for me and my small newborn child. I will hopefully be spending $15,000 or less (or close to that price). I need an automatic vehicle.
Can anyone please help to point me in the direction of vehicles that fit this criteria?

I could answer any questions you have if I need to narrow this search further. Thank you in advance to all who can offer me help.

Subaru....start there. I think Outback is their little SUV.

I think you may be looking for a unicorn. You will either need to raise your allowable price, or look at older models.

Why does it have to be 1-3 years old?

Lots of cars in the 15,000 range that are in good condition but they will be a bit older.

Subaru Forester is what you are describing. In most parts of the country though they really hold their value well, so you will be on the back end of the age range at best, if you even get there. I believe the Forester received the upgraded engine you want for 2012 model year, so I would not go older than that.

You might find a Hyundai Tuscan that works. They don't hold value as well as the Subaru.

you also will be looking at base models to keep price down.

Another option is a Nissan Rogue. They are nice enough.

here are a couple of Rogues that looks nice. Miles not bad, and certified:

In addition to the Forester I would look at the Mazda CX-5.

do any of these cars listed have high costs for servicing and maintenance? or maybe a better way to ask - are any on the lower end for maintenance? thanks

they should all be comparable. Mostly consumables, and none of them are particularly trouble prone.

I'd think the Mazda may be a touch less expensive to maintain- but none of the vehicles listed here will break a budget.
