How does the GTI compare to the A3? It would be great to hear more comparisons to the A3 and if the A3 is worth the price premium.

I still love these VW's but I've been going through a lot of repairs with my 08 Jetta (2.0T, DSG)which makes me think I cannot buy another VW. I really take care of my car and it has cost me 5k in repairs since June. There must be something that triggers a break when the mileage is between 90-100k because it's coming all at once. Let's hope the newer ones are better, but I can't stick around to find out.

I've got a 2009 A3 2.0T, DSG at 112k miles, have the work done at the appropriate intervals(really only oil changes/tuneups), so far no issues.

@dldave - Ouch! This is why Reliability means so much to me. $5k is a totally unacceptable amount for a middle-class car. That's like 10 $500 timing belt changes. I don't expect to spend $5k total on ALL maintenance (including tires) for my Miata pushing it up to 200k and beyond. Heck, we got an 8 year/120k warranty on our Pilot that only cost $1,500. $5,000... ugh!

I recently sold my 07 GLI because the repairs were getting exorbitant (it only had about 80k miles) and it was burning large quantities of oil. Great car and so much fun to drive, but my poor college budget couldn't handle it anymore. I'll see how my dad's Mk7 Golf ages before I decide if I'll by a GTI when I graduate from grad school.

I second the request to compare the GTI and the A3! It would be great to see what kind of benefit the A3 really brings over the GTI.
