Brake feel

So, yesterday (technically), I test drove the two cars I'm looking at to replace the car I lost to an engine fire (a 2009 Scion tC): a Mazda3 Touring hatch and a Volkswagen Golf. I loved driving them both and can't yet decide (though I'm leaning towards the Mazda, albeit slightly less so after the test drive).

However one thing did bother me about the Mazda3: the car I drove had a brake pedal that was hard to push, as if the brake booster was bad or something (I had plenty of braking power, it just was hard to push the brake pedal down, and I still feel the pain in my foot from doing so). Is this normal or was it just something wrong with the test car I drove?
