Starts, goes into gear, won't move

I have a 2005 Dodge Dakota Crew Cab. It turns on, lets me shift into drive but then the engine just revs. The only way it will move is if I put it into 4 wheel drive low.

    Can you tell if all four wheels are engaged in 4WD low? If, for example, the rear end was kaput, the truck MIGHT be moving with the front wheels doing the work. But I suspect that it's not that simple. More details will help folks trying to figure out what's going on. We have a lot of smart car-tech types around here (way smarter than me :) ) and hopefully they'll be able to point you in the right direction
