2008 Subaru Tribeca: serpentine belt

2008 Subaru Tribeca: While driving at 30 km/hr on cold (-18 degree C) snowy day, after only two minutes away from my home, came three warning lights - break light, battery and differential temperature. Brought the car back to home and found the surpentine belt came out and idler pully also loose/broken.
1) How the differential temp is related to the belt ?
2) How was I able to drive the car without surpentine belt?
