Airbags on Cubes

Everytime I start my car I see on the dash a message telling me Passenger Airbag off. This happens if someone is sitting on that side or not. Does that mean the airbag has been disabled ? If I'm in a wreck I want to know the airbag is working . Has anyone else had this problem ?

I believe the light should go off perhaps after a minute if there is indeed a passenger with some weight to them sitting there, if it doesn't it should be fixed
