Self Driving vehicles may also reduce the 'need' for such powerful engines. Who cares if your car goes 0 to 60 in 6 seconds, if the computer is driving. There's no longer a visceral pleasure, just annoying head-snapping while you're trying to read. This could lead to a significant reduction in fuel usage.

On a related theme, I'm disappointed that Honda's Acura NSX is really an update on the original concept rather than breaking new ground. The world is changed and changing rapidly. In a sense the Alfa Romeo 4C shows the way. What if Honda (or someone) took an NSX-like approach to a machine with a mid four-cylinder turbo, hybridized, plug-in, extrme attention to weight, with NSX-like reliability, practicality, and a performance mode that woud shatter machines with More Power... that might show the way forward. Perhaps BMW...?
