2002 Subaru Legacy automatic transmission noise

My 02 Legacy with 185k suddenly developed a whining noise I believe from the transmission. The noise coincides with engine rpm. The noise lessens when the load is taken off the transmission when at cruising speed.
The trans shifts perfect and the fluid doesn't look too bad. Any clues what the cause is ? Any help is appreciated.

    Have you checked the alternator? Cheaper-to-fix things should be eliminated first.
