It all sounds great and it all looks great, but it's based on the Fiat 500X? Didn't that vehicle rank poorly as far as mechanical problems and reliability? Fiat as a brand has a poor reputation for quality vehicles, Jeep has a questionable reputation, and Chrysler has a poor reputation....I don't know....I really want to consider the Jeep Renegade....I really want to like it, but the track record of these 3 companies building poorly made vehicles make me want to look at the Honda and the Mazda closer...as far as Chevy...I've been a GM guy for 30 years or so, but I kind of lost faith in how much they really care about their customer base over profit with their legal issues over the last few years.

The Fiat 500X is a 2016 that isn't released yet so it might be more fair to say the 500X is based on the Renegade.

You must be referring referring to another 500 which the Renegade is not based on. Easy mistake to make given all the 500+letter names that Fiat uses.

Small, but roomy and square. I like it.

I'm with Chrisb23 on this. Its a great looking vehicle but all three brands, Chrysler, Jeep and Fiat seem unwilling to address poor quality, reliability and bottom of the bucket JD Power scores. Much like my feelings concerning VW, great design but total avoidance of discussing or more importantly guaranteeing trouble free ownership

I'm with you guys, I want to like the car and kind of do. That said, I am having flashbacks of past Jeep's (the early libertys) and Chrysler products.. I personally wouldn't have the confidence yet to pull the trigger on a purchase.

@chirsb23 - I guess that depends on which consumer watchdog you want to go by. Consumer reports has the Fiat 500L one of the highest in initial quality compared to a Mini or other small compacts in it's class, in addition, the Chrysler 300 and 200 have been climbing up the ladder in terms of reliability according to AAA, KBB and Consumer Reports. The Charger is somewhat of a mystery considering it's basically the same car, but that's probably considering people drive that car harder. I agree that prior Jeeps have had their issues, but with the ZF designed transmission now standard, and Pentastar V6 available in most of their products, the brand is proving to hold up. In regards to this article, though this car looks like a fun to drive little CUV, I would probably spend a little more and opt for a Forester XT.

The Renegade Trailhawk looks all sorts of fun.
A CUV that actually can 'off road'.

I had 2 jeeps 1993 & 1994 with no problems, and CR gives the 2.0 dodge dart the 2nd highest rating in its segment. I just checked cars.com and some of the jeeps have 400K, 500K, and more miles on the odometers, + and have been in shuttle vans with 300K +. My concern with e Mazda and Subaru would be rust, at least here in the Northeast

In Britain, I own Land Rover Defenders which are loosely based from the Jeep originals and the models have conquered the world. In my opinion, Jeep need to get cracking and build modestly-priced Jeep Gladiator or J12 pickup since there's clearly a need for a small-medium, GP pickup truck in the US and further afield.

My 1992 Defender 90 is the stalwart of the iconic range and it has a 2.5Tdi 'bullet-proof' engine but in all other areas the vehicle is strictly utilitarian. Naturally it cannot meet with EPA's current legislation but there is a huge demand (as can be seen in the US Defender sites) or this vehicle type in the US and Jeep could go a long way to recapture that market, if they modernised an offering like the Gladiator or J12.

Keep it light in construction with an alloy 1.5-2.0lt gas engine and a 2.5lt diesel option. Selectable AWD, since many people would use 2WD on-road and this would further improve mpg, as would an optional manual gearbox but for the US, an automatic gearbox is almost a must-have. Give it decent ground-clearance, coil-springs , air-con and a versatile bed-length & weight capacity as well as models in single-cab and double-cab form with options from the Defender-like utilitarian to 'city-slickers' expectations and at a price which undercuts the base Toyota Tacoma and Jeep will never look back.

Edmunds calls this Renegade "tiny" even though its footprint is similar to the 1984-2001 XJ Cherokee. That classic vehicle also rode on a 101 inch wheelbase with an overall length of about 166 inches. It was actually several inches narrower than the new Renegade.

Looks promising and perhaps notable for getting back to traditional jeep basics. The 1.4 turbo certainly offers a lot of potential for upgrades, but I do not understand why jeep does not offer the off-road package with the 1.4 and manual transmission. After all isn't jeep suppose to be about the adventure.

I have a 2015 Renegade Latitude 4x4 and trailer hitch. I just took a trip to Florida. On the way down from Michigan. I stopped in South Bend, Indiana, filled up and reset the trip meter. I filled up next just north of Nashville and then next in Cordelle Georgia. I drove a 65-70 all that way through Indianapolis, Louisville, Nashville, through the mountains, Chattanooga and Atlanta. For the 847 distance from South Bend to Cordelle, the trip meter said I had 33.9 mpg and my total gas used was 24.7 gal or 34.1 mpg
