2004 Elantra with rough acceleration

My 04 Elantra GT is having acceleration problems, along with "missing" while just going down the road. It displayed a code 2 weeks ago that indicated a cam shaft sensor actuator (I think), apparently this is a part inside where the timing belt is. My mechanic consulted some other forums and then cleared the oil ports, changed the oil (it was low) and the car ran ok for about a day. It's back to doing the same thing, but not showing a code.
What else could cause this type problem with acceleration? I hate to pay big bucks for getting all the way into the engine unless absolutely necessary. Could it be the fuel filter or another sensor that isn't throwing a code?
