BMW i3 range extender

Hello, I would like to know more about i3 range extender. I know its gas engine does not connect to wheel and it's only for generating electricity. My question is: Can i3, in theory, be the only car? Even without charge station or outlet at home (such as live in a leased apartment), can i3 always drive with its gas engine to generate electricity, never need to find charge station? Is that workable?

Just like Chevy Volt can be the only family car and for inter-state traveling. I want to know whehter i3 range extnedcer has the same idea.
