1993 Geo Prizm Spark Problem

Hello all, I love the Geo's they seem to last me forever. However no matter how long they last all cars have problems at some point so here's my problem. There is a yellowish object off to the side of the rotor in the distributor that has a metal prong coming off of it. This prong sparks when I try to start my car. I'm just wondering what this is? I thought the power went straight up to rotor where it turned to hit contact points. So what is this other object and what is it used for? I've search google for hours and can't get an image.
