Lost power and engine light on while driving?

Need quick advice...Today I was driving on interstate, while still on gas pedal engine just revved up, rpm went to 3000, engine light came on and then I slowed down and drove it at 40mph to home. It has all gears except rpm stays at approx 3000 in drive, it is normally always at approx little over 1000 while in regular driving gear. It is an automatic. What is the problem with my 03 Liberty Limited? Any help would be appreciated.

    In other vehicles I would wonder about Throttle position sensor, don't know if it might be applicable to yours
