Why won't my car move when I shift it into reverse or drive?

It feels like it is trying to go but it doesn't move. What could be wrong?

First I would check and see if you have the correct amount of transmission fluid first. Low on fluid for awhile could cause major slippage in the tranny. When you put it in gear and press on the gas does the engine just raise RPM's?
