    City mileage is distorted in your part of the country because you are stuck in traffic everyday (a way of life in LA) as opposed to city driving where I live with no stuck in traffic idling the engine and wasting gas.

    and even when the traffic is moving on the freeway it is really easy to drop the mpg by jumping into open spots. If I drive a bit more aggressively on the freeway it will drop my mpg by 2-3 just from all the extra accelerating to get around other cars and into openings. But that is the nice thing if you get a comfortable enough car it is easier to sit back and go with the flow more :)
