Experience with Run Flat Tires
I am at a loss to understand BMW's reasoning for fitting run flats! I have had 328 Xi coupe with staggered tires then I had X6! With staggered tire configuration,I could not even rotate tires!
Being in North East, obvious reason for choosing AWD was better traction during winter. However both these vehicles were fitted with summer tires!
I had read somewhere when BMW started fitting their vehicles with run flat tires, their argument was that to reduce weight of spare as well as to improve performance. In real world how many of us would actually notice this difference is open to debate!Since most of us are using these vehicles for commuting rather than anything else, except for a few! The only advantage of course is that one can drive with a flat .
Given the conditions of most of the roads are in with these low profile tires many drivers are hit with replacing tires as well as rims which of course are more costly than the regular tires! Given the fact that most of us would adhere to speed limits while driving, being regular drivers, I wonder how many of us would complain if we are able to turn @ 50 mph or @40-45 mph!? That being the reason for low profile tires!
My X6 had 20" rims and with less than 10,000 miles on tires it had started making weird wind noise when driven at about 65 mph speed. Of course rides were always noisy and stiff!
I believe not many manufacturers offer these tires on their vehicle . That leads me to believe these tires do not satisfy these manufacturers's objectives on performance as well as on road holding !
I feel BMW needs to offer choices to customer if they want to have run flats or conventional tire, if they are not willing to offer only conventional tires!
