Wow, a Mini Cooper is 157.4 inches, that really drives home to me how much physical growth has happened in the small car world in recent years. The Cooper is longer than my old A1 Volkswagen Rabbit and Golf GTI were back in the day, and about as long as the larger A2 Golf GTI I drove for 267k miles. Hardly seems "mini" any more. The Rabbit drove very well for the era, and had 155mm tires all around, as the i3 has only on the front. Cars back then perhaps did not have ultimate cornering power that wide tires allow, but steering precision and on-center feel was worlds better than today's much wider, heavier tires, and they were very parkable.

If only there were an easy-to-use escape hatch out the roof of the vehicle. Then you could park it mere inches away from anything.

Yes, but the GTI is now 167.5"!! That's nearly a foot longer than the MINI. Everything has grown.

darex, well, yeah. That's why the Polo is the equivalent of the old Rabbit/Golf these days, VW has explicitly moved the Golf up to a larger class. But Mini as a brand was built around the very compact dimensions of the original "new" Miin of the modern era, which had to be larger than the original. I'm just surprised at how much the new Mini has grown in its third generation.

Meanwhile, aren't we all a little tired about VW's coyness with the Polo? Just bring it over already...or don't.
