For the Aveo isn't the ECHO, but the Scion xA. For about $13k it comes well-equipped--a little more than the Aveo LS but with Toyota's reputation for reliability and a longer powertrain warranty behind it. But Scions aren't available in most of the U.S. until this summer.
Today, I saw a new Chevrolet Aveo LS pulling out of a rental car place. It was pretty nifty. In the past, I have actually hated things like Chevy/Geo Metros, or Toyota Echos. However, the Aveo was quite the looker when put up next to the others. I currently own a 2002 Alero, but if I was in the market for a new compact auto, I would definitely look into the Aveo. BTW, the Aveo that I saw was an awesome blue!
I think the Aveo is a great looking car. When you add up it's assets against the competition, it may not come out on top but it seems like a nice package. If I were in that price range I would consider the Ion 1 from Saturn. Their is not that much price difference when you add A/C in price. The Ion is a larger and has a side cutain airbag option. The Ion hasn't been around long enough to prove it's reliablity. However, with all the trucks on the road, The added size of the Ion would be a bit of a plus to me.Another car I would consider is the Suzuki Forenza. It comes wiith a longer warranty than the Aveo and doesn't cost that much more. The Aveo will grab some buyers with it's great styling and hatchback utility,I do not think GM wants to sell the Aveo in great quantities in this country. They probably want to use the production capacity for sales in the rest of the world. My main issue with the Aveo would be,since it uses a rubber timing belt you can get Koreon cars in the same price range with better powertrain warranties that will cover you longer and protect you if your belt breaks and causes engine damage. There are cars like Ion 1 near the same price that could be safer. I hope for those bitten by the Aveo look and hacth appeal that it will be a great and reliable package.
Both of these have serious deficiencies, based on recent test drives (I posted these in the "Low End Cars..." board in Sedans.) I haven't driven the Aveo yet so I can't tell if it's any better, but I don't think the ION 1 or Forenza are better values than, say, the Elantra.
...is now showing the Pontiac version of the Aveo, the "Wave"...the overall styling doesn't do much for me but the Ponitac grille insert isn't bad. Check gmcanada.com
has already bought an Aveo and gives her comments on her new ride there. Check out those posts..she likes the Aveo way more than the Kia Rio she test drove. I can't wait to see an Aveo on the road...I haven't seen one at a rental car place, my local Chevy dealer or out on the road yet. Whaddup...come on! Oh, BTW, going w/o A/C is NOT an option for me here in Missouri, though. I'd melt away for good in the summer and fall!
The AVEO can be had with ABS as an option on the Base and LS models. However, right now there is no option for the side airbags or curtain airbags.

The Chevy dealers here in So. CT have one or two Aveos in stock. I plan to get a loaded LS model very soon. Have to spend those GM credit card $$$$ before they all expire! If I get out today, I take some pics of the ones I've seen and post them for you.
Hurry up before your GM credits expire, and once you get it, post the driving experience, pics or at least give your opinion of the small car. Are you planning on the hatchback or the sedan?
THAT'S the problem! EVERY month something drops off because the last time I used those credits was for my 1996 Buick Riviera. GM didn't have anything I liked when I was in the market again in '99. Since then, I've had one Chrysler product, a 300M-UGH- and one Acura CL-S currently- very nice.
I'm getting the sedan. Just not sure what color. I would have liked Lt. Beige, but they don't make it! Red is my favorite color, but not sure I like the shade of red they have or if I even like the way the AVEO looks in that color. White is ok, but it needs something on the body to dress it up a little- pin striping? Green I don't like. Black is way to hard to keep clean, but it would look FANTASTIC with the ZAINO polish I use! The bright blue color would wear thin after a while- I think. That leaves silver and pastel blue?
Time will tell. I will post my thoughts. I'm getting rid of a 1994 Toyota Corolla that does NOT owe me a dime. Only within the past several months have I ever had to replace anything of consequence. That included the alternator and the starter and the front brakes. Several years ago, I got a new Diehard battery. Aside from normal oil/filter/fluid changes, this car has been fantastic. It sits outside 24/7, gets polished MAYBE once a year and doesn't have ONE rust spot anywhere. Usually goes through the local, brushless, car wash especially in the winter. The AC is freezing cold and the heater is boiling hot! The ONLY reason I'm getting rid of it is because it kills me to lose those GM credits. I feel like I'm throwing money out the window every month.
should be similar to the Corolla in the sense that it has a great A/C/Heater, it needs little or no maintenance. My 88 Escort maybe got washed twice a year, didn't get rust until towards trade in, had a great heater, a great Air Conditioner and it was a decent ride that was cheaper than buying a Civic then. Granted, a Civic may have gone longer, but I'd probably would have traded it in anyways in 1997.
color that was on the Pontiac Wave for the Canadian market? Will Chevy sell it in that color in America? Some of the new-gen Tiburon drivers would love that color for their Tibs but it's from another country's market. I agree, the Aveo is going to be a low-maintenace car for buyers.
From my experiences, are typically low cost cars that don't require a lot of maintenance. It's when you start sliding yourself behind a bigger American car, do you start finding fit and finish problems, along with reliability.
with an American "bow-tie" fitted on it. It must meet U.S.air standards, etc., and it will definitely be a low maintenance-cost car. It will be fun to watch and see how many Chev sells.
I drove the accent, the scion and the aveo. the smoothes and the most stable ride was the aveo, even with its soft suspention. also is really quiet, even more quiet then the scion. also the scion is notorios in winds, and also used to drive an echo crap. i love what for 14, or rather around 12k from rydell dealerships since they do not deal or rather sell cars at invoice only, is cheap. also saw a few in europe back in setptember. they are just nice, and hatchbacks are the best. with a nice sound system and bigger rims and tints, will b awsome car, too bad does not have an armrest...
Sat in the Daewoo Chevy Optra today when I got my car serviced. They had one beside the service window. Pretty nice and a step up from the Aveo. Too bad it's not for sale in the U.S. I guess GM figures small cars are bigger business up here.
Local dealer just got in 3 sedans. I was interested in hatchback. Found out warranty is only 3/36. If GM won't match other Korean's warranty,I'll probably go with Scion XA for another $k for the reliability factor.
Ok, I know I live in the Armpit of America ,(St.Louis) but Chevy dealers here act as if I had asked to see their mothers underwear when I ask when an Aveo hatch will be on the lot. Have any of you in the Midwest seen one yet? My sister in Charlston SC states that the Rental fleets have them all over down there.
still soundly in the armpit region, and I've seen hide nor hair of the new Chevrolet Aveo over here either. I did see a Scion sqaurebox over by Bolivar on a road trip a couple of weeks ago. Apparently the Midwest is a Toyota of America-approved unveiling area for those new models. There's but one Chevy dealer in Rolla and I watch it nearly daily for the Aveo's, but nothing yet.
About 3 weeks ago my local dealer in the Twin Cities told me they would be getting their first Aveos in 4-6 weeks. I have yet to see one on the road. I was in Las Vegas for the past two weeks and saw an ad in the local paper stating that Aveos had arrived. Maybe since cities like St. Louis and Minneapolis are almost smack-dab in the middle of North America (as far away from a seaport as you can get in NA), it takes longer for imports to arrive.
for inexpensive, reliable transportation and trying to find information from people who own the Aveo. Will you be able to install after market cruise control? Also, FYI you can get on gmbuypower site and enter your zip code and search dealer lots for Aveos. http://www.gmbuypower.com/splash.html
I don't think I'm in the armpit region of the US, just the "robber baron" state of CT with a governor on the verge of being impeached! Can't wait! The Chevy dealers around here have a few Aveos. However, I have not seen any hatchbacks yet. I've seen the Aveo in Bright Blue, White, Silver and Red so far. Leaning toward the Silver at the moment.
I am a little confused about the options and the Aveo LS badges on the car. On the GM website, there is an option for an upgraded 6-speaker system. However, Edmunds does not have that choice for the LS. Also, I thought I read somewhere that the LS had "fog/driving" lights standard. Yet, the ones I have seen at the dealers that are supposed to be LS models have no lights. Also, I have seen pics of the back of the Aveo LS that had that lettering on the left side of the trunk, but the LS models at the dealer had no such letting?
If you want to see an Aveo hatch, I saw one over here at Poughkeepsie Chevy/Cadillac in NY (wonder when they'll remove the Olds sign...). Just grab I84 West and get off on US9 North it'll get you right there. I realize that might not be what some people call "close" but it's not terribly far...and I'll ask some of my friends from the "Berry" areas if they've seen any (Southbury/Waterbury/Danbury).
They had a red one sitting right out front by the road. I didn't stop in to see it, but it looks pretty good in person...and for some reason it doesn't look as small as it is (unless you get up close, probably). Just don't actually go IN to that dealer...they have a reputation for being crooks.
Here in CT, many of the dealers are OPEN on Sunday and have been for the past several years. So, you still have to check it out BEFORE driving in to LOOK!
BREAKING NEWS
The AVEO now has a 5 year/60,000 transmission warranty! The bumper to bumper is still 3/36.
Just ordered a fully loaded Galaxy Silver Metallic AVEO LS 4-door. Will definitely report back when it arrives and how it performs as compared to the 94 Toyota Corolla that it will be replacing. If it's 1/2 as good as the Toyota has been for the past 10 years I'll be thrilled!
I too want to buy one of these cars and I was wondering if you can give us a ball park figure price? Im paying cash when I can actually find one and would love to know the going rate. Im guessing no more than $13k for the ls? Yes some dealers are open on Sunday. I found out the hard way. I felt like a seal in a sea of sharks lol.
I have an HD Crew cab and work a 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off schedule offshore and make home about 800 miles away from work. So I am looking at buying a little car just for the commute from home to work every 2 weeks, and the Aveo sounds about what I want, but cruise control is a must.
Since the Aveo doesn't have factory cruise control, you could get an aftermarket system, or buy a Honda Civic LX for $17,000, which I am positive has cruise control.
or do some strength building exercises for your right leg.
or, buy the cavalier. I would bet the last cavaliers that sell before its gone will have enormous incentives, likely to the point where it would be 9 thou or so, for one with cruise and abs. I think the cav and aveo will have similar mpg.
I read in a Canadian magazine today that GM is actually using Canada as a test for the acceptance of the Optra and Epica models. If they do well here, expect to see them in the U.S. next year.
All three Daewoos have 5 year 100K power train warranties up here.
