Check engine enigma?

The 'check engine' light has been coming on during start-up, and staying lit for about 10 seconds before going out. The engine seems to be running fine, until yesterday. My wife came home from shopping, and when I tried to move the car, putting it in reverse...nothing happened. Same thing when I put it in drive. It was like it was in neutral. I put the transmission in park, turned it off, and restarted it (with some difficulty). This time when I put it in reverse or forward, it worked normally. Any idea what is going wrong, and a possible fix? Thanks for any info.
