Timing Belt Replacement Questions

Hi all. Newbie mechanic here trying to fix my 94 Caravan before a show. I am replacing timing belt. I was having a very difficult time determining which stroke was the compression stroke (to find TDC) ... I felt a rush of air on both strokes through the #1 spark plug hole.. So I just guessed which revolution of the crank I should go with...

I have the timing belt on, and I was going to test to see whether the car would run. Although it does run, it is extremely rough. Granted there is no coolant, the timing covers are off, the engine mount is off, as well as the accessory belt... Would this cause the engine to sound so rough? I am worried something might be wrong with the timing and I don't want to reassemble everything if that is the case.

Just in case you're wondering, I only ran the engine for 4 or 5 seconds.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help.
