Will a truck topper off of a 1996 chev short box fit on a 2005?

Probably not but you really won't know until you test it. Long ago I had a friend who sold pickup canopies and always had used ones in stock. Some of the old ones would fit a ten year newer truck and some wouldn't fit the next year's model. He'd just set 'em in the bed with a forklift and eyeball the fit. Back then, the fitment guides weren't updated very well but you may find a truck accessory dealer who'll know off the top of their head.
