. A friend has a tow service and was called to tow an abandoned 97 c230 from a foreclosed property. I want to buy this car from them but it has no key, I talked to all the neighbors and was advised that the owner left it about 5 months ago and no one knows where he is. I dont even know if the car runs but would like to get it started to check it out before spending the money to purchase the car and apply for a title. If I get an ecu with its key from a wrecked car will it start this car? Any help would be greatly appreciated

No, that won't get it to start. You will have to get the title first, and then Mercedes will make a key for you from the VIN. On the bright side, that would cost less than a used PCM would.

unfortunately that wont be cheaper, it cost app 400 bucks to get a title and 300 or so to get a new key and have it programed to the ecu, thats too big a gamble not knowing if it even runs. I just bought a key, all the lock cylinders and the ecu for 220.

While a qualified and properly equipped shop can set the vehicle up, they won't do it without valid proof of ownership. (nor should they)

I have the notice the mortgage company placed on the car, to be removed within 24 hours or it would be towed. this notice was carried out as per florida law. The tow company has held the car the lawfully required amount of time. I thought that only a mercedes dealership could perform the necessary programing to start the car. Any help would be apreciated, I am a retired Sheriffs K-9 Sgt. so there is no shady dealings occurring.

Florida is a big state, but if you are near Gainesville, check out Continental Imports.
