Rearview mirror temp and compass intermittently begins flashing gibberish

The temperature and compass LED on my 2003 Tahoe rearview mirror intermittently begins flashing gibberish. This happens when the mirror is exposed to direct sunlight and the back of the mirror becomes very warm to touch. The rear of the mirror temperature also gets quite warm even when driving at night, but the compass/temp work. OnStar works when the temp and compass display is malfunctioning.

I have the same problem, I have noticed that it happen when 35 degrees or colder. Does any one know a fix for this problem. I don't want to replace the mirror and find out it may be another problem, a new mirror run around 380.00

My 2008 Tahoe LTZ displays the compass, but not the temperature. It displays OC where the temperature should be.
Many ideas on a fix? I suspect that it was in a crash that wasn’t reported because the headlights are out of whack and the bolts on the battery side of the fender were painted.

The ambient temperature sensor may have been damaged. Or the cable damaged or not reconnected after body work.
I don't remember what it should do but removing the connector should have a specified effect on the temperature the system reads with no sensor.

This diagram may help you find the location of the ambient temperature sensor AND it's cable. Check the connector for corrosion.

    #4 and #3 in diagram.

If you need the sensor, these are vehicles which use the same piece
