Over heating issues - 1995 Civic

I have a 95 civic ex and it seems to over heat when I let it idle. It doesn't always do it but eventually it will. Anti freeze starts spraying everywhere and you can see it boil in the tank. By the time it cools down there's nothing left in the tank or the radiator itself. When I'm driving it doesn't overheat? It just doesn't make sense. I've been told a thermostat, and then I've read about its a head gasket.. Not sure.. Any more opinions?
