    Initial quality....

Nothing to do with if the car falls apart in a year.

My Dad's 2005 Camry V6 does not have a rattle or squeak in it, it feels like a new car tracking straight without any vibrations and whisper quiet at idle. He has not had a single repair of any kind. The clear coat on the spoiler is starting to bubble a little bit, that is the only flaw I could find. I drive it now and then when he goes south for the winter to keep it charged up.

Hell, even the 1971 Vega scored high marks its first year out! These initial quality things are pretty meaningless. Anyway, most cars are built pretty well these days, so the chances of getting a lemon are pretty rare. Also, what counts as a "defect" is often laughable. I remember when Hummer was still around, poor fuel economy was actually listed as a "defect"!
